Auto Stop/Start Stalling Issues

Have any other F10 owners been experiencing stalls when the vehicle tries to restart the engine after an automatic stop? I picked up my 2013 535i XDrive in August and have been experiencing this on a regular basis, expecially over the past 3-4 weeks. It mainly appears to happen when the engine has not fully warmed up. I called the dealership to report this, and they said that they have seen the same thing with many of their models and suggested that I could disable A.S.S. until the engine is warm. I can't help thinking though that a vehicle at this price shouldn't have these problems and that BMW must have issued a software fix for it at some point. The other problem for me (besides the embarrasment factor) is that this type of issue could lead to an accident in certain driving situations.

Any feedback on whether others have been experiencing the same thing would be welcome.

Thanks.

Sorry you are experiencing this. I have a January 2012 build 2012 535i and have never had the car stall on a restart of the auto start/stop, and I rarely turn it (start/stop) off, and have never turned it off first thing after starting car up. You would think a 2013 would not have the issue if a 2012 doesn't.

No stalling issues here, even with a cold engine. Some have reported engine stall when letting go off the brakes when the engine is trying to stop, in heavy traffic, you should shut off the ASS.

ASS should not result in stalling. My F10 has never stalled during my ownership. I would take this in for BMW to address as this shouldn't be happening in your car.

OP when you say stall do you mean after the engine starts, it goes into the neutral gear? I've been experiencing that on my car.

Mine has never stalled and doing so sounds very dangerous! I got my dealer to kick my ASS anyway:thumbup:

In my case it goes into neutral, but the engine also turns off, resulting in a complete stall. I have noticed that some in the F30 forums were experiencing something similar earlier this year.

ASS SUCKS! Get rid of it.

wow that sounds pretty dangerous. I brought my issue to the dealer and they said they tested it but couldn't replicate the problem so nothing was done. I also requested that they update my car to have the last user mode enabled so that if you turned off your ASS it'll remember next time when you start the car. My ASS is still enabled, but my semi stall issue has happened twice since I've gotten it back from the dealer.

Auto-stop problems

I have had the auto-stop problem since I bought my 2012 535i new about seven months ago. The car hesitates as it comes back on line and slips into neutral. BMW service had the car this past week and "found nothing wrong." It's the second time I took it in.

I have concluded that the problem I was experiencing was due to the relatively low mileage (<20 miles/day) on my regular commute, and the depletion of the battery as a result of 5-10 auto stop/starts per day. The problem only appeared some 6 weeks after taking possession from the dealer. It then disappeared after an appointment with the dealer to look into the problem. They found nothing wrong but apparently charged the battery during the visit, which would explain why the issue appeared to go away for a while before re-appearing in early December.

I have now turned off the auto-stop feature and don't think that I shall have any use for it as long as my daily mileage is as low as it currently is. I must say that I agree with the posts made elsewhere about the strain imposed on the battery by this feature.

Although I got rid of the ASS, it has always worked properly. My understanding is that when you are first driving, ie a cold engine, the ASS does not shut down the engine.

Make an investment in a GoPro camera and set it up to record you and the instrument panel. Then, make a CD of the events to show to the SA. Good luck.

I have had it happen twice in 10,000 miles. When it happens it is very unnerving.

This thread only proves what many of us have complained about and stated a year ago... ASS is the stupidest and most dangerous invention in the automotive history.... (or close) , right next to the check engine light.

I simply cannot fathom how one could be pulling up to the middle of a busy intersection gearing up for a left turn with two-three lanes of oncoming traffic, only to have the car die on them (ASS) and hope to restart promptly when an opening is found to gun it before one gets t-boned by oncoming cars at 30-40 mph...

....

Although turning off ASS has "taken care" of your problem, you do realize that something is still not quit right, right?

I've driven mine for daily short trips (<20 miles) with ASS for weeks without having this problem. But I do agree that ASS has got to go.

Here's my take...I don't like it but I paid for it and if I paid for it, it better work, even though I am going to disable it. :D

Any fix for this? It just started happening on my 2012 535i. It happens when I come to a stop and just as I am about to start up again the auto stop wants to turn the engine off. As it quickly turns back on the tranny shifts to N.

I had this happen twice - both at intersections with heavy traffic. It was annoying and dangerous. The car goes into neutral and shuts off. Coded to get rid of the ASS and happy now.
