mine sounds like a bunch of broken tea cups in a metal bucket. I'm going to just cut the bottom open and empty it. I get no errors.

jigga1 10-10-2012 06:08 PM

Yea mine cooling down you can hear the metal cracking.. and i start up it feels like enginge has back pressure

I know magnaflow has one for the pre vanos 540i. Maybe they have one for you.

Andreas540i 10-10-2012 07:01 PM

I replaced my broken one with a straight pipe, and split the signal from the other one to avoid an CEL.

jigga1 10-10-2012 07:14 PM

I bought magnaflow hm99 but they wudnt fit side by side and no shop wanted to touch them.

I replaced my 97 cats with DEC, it was OEM replacement fit, however it throws CAT efficiency code on highway speed sometimes. I would not buy them again.

I read that BMW put the a/c condensation water drain hose right above the cats so the water would evaporate when it falls onto the hot cats. Perhaps this is what you're hearing?

jigga1 10-11-2012 09:17 AM

Yeah ima aware of where those hoses are their not in a position to drop water on it. Gt my car diagnost by dealer and random shop.. every one said cats.. but code are p1145 & p1495..and i strongly think its the cats u can feel it holding back the car

I have the exact problem with one of my cats on my 2002 530i. It sounds like somebody is running a hammerdrill on a tile floor most of the time.

I even took it to a muffler shop (I know the owner) and we detected it on the 2nd bank (cyl 4-6) of cats. I live in Kalifornia, and just discovered that the CARB (California Air Resources Board) does not allow any aftermarket cats for my year and model. They do list aftermarket for a 2002 330i, but not mine. I have to buy an BMW one. The cheapest I could find one of the genuine BMW cats was for around $650! I'm thinking of just buying it and installing it myself, but I've no clue how hard this would be.

jigga1 10-11-2012 03:07 PM

If you have the right tool go for it.. bit if not i wud go to di next state over and see if they can do it. And if calli checks if its aftermarket.. theirs always a loop hole

The sound is NOT the tinking when cooling, it is over every bump. The porcelain webbing has let loose and is rattling around inside. A swift hit from below with a fist and you can hear my china shop inside. Kinda embarrassing. A 1/4 inch hole with a drill then a nibbler and I can make a door to remove it. Then a nice SS wire bead and it's all back together. Can't imagine it would interfere with anything.
