You need the ipod adapter. It removes the cd changer from your glove compartment and installs there. Easy job but I believe it was about two hundred dollars for the part...it been a while.
Do a search. Im sure there is a dyi for the ipod adapter install.

In my 06 I just put the MOST adapter in two days ago. Had to remove the cd changer, and unplug it, and plug in the new mode. Install was easy, but the finishing touches took longer than I thought they would. Just glad to have my ipod back, but programing is taking me a little longer too. not enough time in the day. The unit cost me about $350 at my dealership, so be ready to shell out some bucks, but it is worth it.

I have one of those iPod/iPhone adapters with FM radio and it works fine. It's the GOgroove FlexSMART 4i Car Mount System and I bought it on Amazon.

iPod/MP3 device adapter

I spent about $500 (parts & labor) to have my custom audio installer do it here in the Chicago suburbs. He's done a lot of work on my E63 (2005), including installing the Escort 9500ci integrated radar/laser system. Very clean work.

If you need, I can get the make/model of the unit. I think there are only 1 or 2 options for this on the market given the complexity of the fiber connectors of the BMW radio unit.

can you tell me how the actual audio quality is with this device?.......say, compared to the OEM CD player? thanks!

It works ok, although you have to crank up the volume a bit as compared to say satellite. I guess it's not as powerful a feed. You also have to be sure to find an empty fm band which can change as you get into different geographies. You can program in 4 different fm channels so switching to a different unused one is easy.

Hard wired mp3/ipod player solution

I have done comparisons between CD quality and MP3 quality with both my BMW OEM equipment and Hifi systems in my house. With my car unit I don't notice any difference, but find that I have significantly more storage on my device vs. carrying a cd library around. I normally save my mp3 files at a very high quality rate of 320kbps; however, that takes up more storage. That's okay because today's memory devices are typically bigger than 8gb for storage, so not a big deal like it used to be.

I did not notice any volume differences with the hardwired solution my audio professional put in. I am VERY happy with it, and he even put the input/connector jack in a very easy and neat/clean location (vs some I've seen where they just leave the chord dangling underneath the dashboard)

I can provide some pictures next week if you are interested.

:)
