Used 2004 X3-Just bought and PROBLEMS-HELP
We just bought a 2004 x3 with 77,000 miles on it on Friday. We review the car fax, etc. Everything was fine. We drove to my parents house for the weekend for a 70th birthday celebration. Tonight on the drive back, we started to smell a burning smell, then I heard a squealing noise. We took an exit to a gas station to figure out what was wrong. My husband checked all fluid levels everything looked fine. We thought maybe something leaked out onto the engine and that was causing the burning smell. Well we then got back in the car and started it up. Put it in gear to back up and head home. Car would not move, put it in drive and would not move either. We called BMW to inquire on what the problem may be. They suggested they thought maybe the breaks were locked in place and told us to try to pulling the parking break up and releasing and pumping foot break in hopes that might relase the breaks being locked. We did that, and the car moved some, in reverse when we gave it gas. When we put it in drive, we started to moved forward and heard this awful clunking noise. So we had to leave our car that we had just bought at a Gas station in a small town. We have no idea what is wrong with the car, I doubt the dealer that we bought the car from will take it back and we go and buy a completely different car. I don't know how much it's going to cost to have the car fixed, I don't know if it's worth the effort or not. Need some advice!

This guy had similar issues and it turned out to be a brake caliper.
