Again i have a 1992 525i ...I opened up my ecu to get a look at what number I had so I could see what chip would work for my car... and below I found thisAttachment 349193
this is my first car and im a little mind ****ed cause my old man owns a detailing shops and I was driving at a young age and now mowing I have a chip in there im worried there's something wrong with my engine cause its piss slow and passing on the high way I have to floor it and down shift to pass someone... but I thought the company's say a performance chip solves that's adds more hp at diffrent areas of rpms so stuff like passing ppl on the highway is easier any info would be great! Thanks in advance!

If you read a little bit on here you find out the 525 is "under-powered" I'm a little Suprised that you complain of such a lack of power. But I've never had faith in a chip.

You would be surprised how much the chip wakes up the 535, I was.

Is the car in question an M20 or M50 525, big difference right there. That said, a stock automatic 2.5L in a 3500 lb car isn't going to be fast, or even adequate, for passing where I live.

Yes mines got the m50 engine I understand that its a 2.5 and its never gonna be extremely fast but I mean its piss slow I wouldn't doubt if the m20 engine was the same speed as my car

Your engine must be really out off tune , to be as slow as u say it is . Ask yourself when the following things have been done . Plugs airfilter fuelfilter oil etc etc .

From what i read, the E34 sits around 3000 pounds, it should be able to move with some power.

Guys I had some problems cause the ecu reset itself and now it seems to be running way better than it did before!

You probably deleted some error codes that were holding the chip back for safety reasons. It is unlikely that the adaptive gear shifts in the transmission could produce such a bad experience as you describe.

Regardless, you should do that tuneup and max out your ecu, and set that as a baseline to benchmark your car from this point forward. Judging by the fact that you have not protested that you've done a tuneup, I think your next visit should be to the maintenance thread....:)

Just some perspective... My C&D from 7/91 has the M50 auto 525 running 0-60 in 9.6 seconds, QM in 17.5 @ 83. Curb wieght listed as 3600 lbs. I think most used Kia's would beat you in a race. Of course, you will look much better doing it;)

@ snowsleds, everything points toward the 535 weighing 3300ish three sites have said it. The 3.5 is the lighter of the 2 engines I'm sure but not 300 pounds. I just don't think these things weigh that much by how nimble they are. Ya know?

They are, in general, close to 3500-3600lbs curb weight.

Well... I was quoting directly from the magazine. In the Jan '89 C&D they test the 535i. Curb weight is listed as 3623 lbs, 0-60 in 7.0 sec and the QM in 15.5 @ 91. my owners manual lists 1620kg ~ 3564 lbs. It actually lists the 1620 but has the lbs as 25xx, which would support your theory but I am pretty sure it is just a misprint:D

They (C&D) also list a 49.9/50.1 F/R weight distribution which accounts for much of the good handling. "Nimble" is pushing it a bit. Competent, solid, predictable would all work for me. Try and E30, those can be nimble and are around 3000 lbs. I've had Porsches that were nimble, just not quite the same in the e34.

I've got the VANOS M50 so there is some difference, but even though there is a noticeable lack of low-end torque, a 525i definitely has some power. I wouldn't call it underpowered or dead on the freeway. Just not fast, either.

Hey Spangler, I re-read your OP and the lack of power and passing power reminded me of when one of my coils went bad. It felt fine when the coil was firing, but lost significant power when the coil wasn't generating spark for the one cylinder. It was not as noticeable of a skip as it is in a 4 cylinder car.

Make sure that all of your coils are good. Test them per the Bentley manual. If there is one bad one, it will make it do as you describe.

I'd like to share a simple way to test if your coil is firing correctly or otherwise. Its a quick and dirty method, so it is imprecise, but it works well as a first response when it comes to the coils.

I'm sure we all have one of those long magnetic probes to retrieve nuts and bolts that have fallen off somewhere. Well they can be used as a mechanic's stethoscope. Open up your plastic cover and start the engine. Place the magnetic end of the probe on coil #1. Make sure the probe has been stiffened into a straight line. Place your ear hard against the other end. Listen to how it sounds as best as you can and note all of the various characteristics.

Repeat with each coil on each cylinder, ensuring that you place the magnetic end on the exact same spot on each coil.

The coil (or plug, or chamber spark plug chamber) that's buggy will sound different from the others. The noise you hear will have a different tone, or there will be much less noise, or something like that. You'll be able to hear the difference despite the engine noise in the background.

You'll need some trial and error to get the hang of it but its fairly intuitive once you give it a go. The important thing is to make sure that you put the probe on the same spot on each coil in turn. To help get the hang of it, you can simply disconnect one of the coil's wires. It will not fire. Then move across all of the coils and hear the difference.

I usually squeeze the little bit of cartilage at the entrance of the ear's canal into the canal itself with the end of the probe. This helps to cut down audible noise from the rest of the engine and makes it somewhat easier to hear the noise that's coming through the probe.

You can also do this with a long handled screwdriver, but the magnetic probe is longer and more flexible. Of course, the ideal tool seems to be the mechanic's stethoscope, but the magnetic probe works fine for most cases for me.

I had to do this recently on my ride and it took me less than 10 minutes from buttoning down the plastic cover to buttoning it back up again. Faster than removing coils and plugs and swopping around etc.

Once you find a funny coil/plug/chamber, you can take other steps to investigate further.

@snowsled, I believe you. It probably is a misprint, I didn't mean nimble for a car, I ment nimble for a 3500+ lb car lol. Nimble is probably still the wrong word. And yeah i knew the weigh balance was 50/50 or very close to it. I just am a little Suprised because I think my little lesser than stock 535 is quick. But on paper It's slow. Maybe I just get into something fast Idk. In my mind 3600 pounds pushed by 211 HP shouldn't feel that quick.
