Anyone else with excessive carbon on exhaust tips?

On our F25 I spent 30 minutes and two types of metal/chrome polish trying to remove the baked on black carbon on the end of the exhaust tips. It would not come off. I have never experienced this problem on any of our other 3 BMW's.

Is there something about the twin tubo 4 banger? Does it run rich? I suspect an issue of some sort but do not have a CEL. Will have to take in for the shop to scan for codes I think just to be safe.

Anyone else notice this issue?

My wife's Acura has the same mess on the exhaust tip as my x3.

No worries... It's an exhaust pipe after all. ;)

Yes, but it is also an engine and it isn't supposed to blow that crap out the poppintubbin. Gonna have the dealer pull the plugs and have a look see at their condition. Something is amiss, it should not be running this rich and didn't earlier on this year after we first got it.

I've got the same problem with the 6 cylinder. I only use 93 gasoline. So, I don't think it's anything we're doing.

same problem 2011 x3 28i chrome tips,parts dealer option, use 91/93.. try cleaning with WD-40, be careful of overspray, better to spray on cloth, than on the black (unpainted) rear bumper.. unless chrome is pitted WD works fairly well..

Formerly I owned an E46 M3. I kept the inside and outside of the pipes clean with Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish. Don't know if you've tried that yet. Took alittel elbow grease, but really worked for me.

My E36 M3 had solid stainless tips that were quite easy to keep clean, inside and out. However, these chrome covered tips don't clean up nearly as easy. Elbow grease and don't wait long between cleanings is my suggestion.

The service manager here says this is normal, but couldn't explain why. I only see it on the right exhaust of my 2013 F25, and it wipes off very easily with a WD-40-soaked paper towel. Odd.

if you pay them for removing spark plugs they will do it, they are not going to removed spark plugs for a normal condition, all exaust tips will have carbon.

Usually one pipe carries the majority of the exhaust until you open her up some and then they both work.

Ya, that's completely normal... both the carbon and the single tip getting dirty. If you drove the car a little harder you'd see carbon on both tips. ;)

Audi 2.0t here... And I do have a lot of carbon gunk out the back. Worse on a white car as it gets all over the paint

excessive carbon/soot in & on exhaust tip(s)
 
have had our new X3 for a month now and havwe cleaned it up a few times already. been using Nevr Dull which is fine for inside the pipe but doesn't work as well on the chrome tip where it's obvioulsy baked on there - takes some elbow grease but it eventually comes off. could this build-up be the result of the Start/Stop function (frequent starts) or the Eco Pro mode that the wife drives with constantly? i'm with ya on this....never had this problem on my old E83 X3.

Not to change the subject, but what is the recommended octane for these engines? i keep seeing folks filling up on 89 to 93.

Driving a new 3 series service loaner with the 28i and noticed that tail pipe gunk (at 3K miles on the clock) which in my old E83 ('06 X3) at 94K miles I do not have!:dunno: Strange, must have something to do with the turbo is all I can figure.:angel:

The manual states that 89 is the minimum and 93 is recommended.

In CA the top generally available is 91, although I am informed that there are some stations that do carry a higher number octane -- but they are specialists and not the run of the mill gas stations.:angel:
