New Owner in Canada

just purchased a 2012 328i in Toronto; surprised at the after sale upsell; offering paint protection, chipguard, tire protection, rust protection etc. Would appreciate some advice from experienced BMW owners. Is any of this necessary?

Absolutely not. All are high profit margin services which benefit the dealer, not the buyer.

Some here will advocate the purchase of wheel and tire insurance, but unless you routinely destroy both in day-to-day driving do not consider it.

If you decide there are any of these items you simply cannot live without, you can purchase them for substantially less than the dealership price.

I had a "clear bra" installed on the front of my BMW, to reduce rock chips. I went to my nearest premium tint and trim shop (authorized 3M installer), and had it installed for about 1/3 the price charged by most dealerships.

Otherwise, I always say "no" to the upsells.

I trade my BMW in every 3 or 4 years and I am on my 4th BMW in 10 years. Part of the reason I can afford a new car every 3 years is I always go for a very lightly optioned car (the dealer will only give you a trade in value of about 20 cents on the dollar for the options) and I never go for any of the extra warranties, undercoats, tire insurance that the dealer tries to sell you after you have bought the car. After negotiating a final cash price, I now just go in to pick up my car with a cheque and the dealer doesn't even bother trying to upsell me on that other garbage........

thanks all; I appreciate your advice.

If you are leasing for 3 years or more worth taking excessive wear use warranty it is 1100+tax but worth it at the end(return of lease) as it not only covers dents scratches but also Rim/tire. So at the end drop your keys and leave(i believe limit is 7800). I did not have in my first lease and end up paying 1500 to repairs scratches although dealer cover for some minor ones.
But if purchasing no need for those extra up-sell.
