Check engine light?

Have P2187 and P2189 showing on the OBD port as check engine light comes on the dash.

Says system lean on banks 1 and 2.

symptoms so far if its cold out the car has a rough idle ( HAS THE SHAKES) until it gets warmer.

My first guess is that the dealer should replace the OXY sensors. Car is still under warranty.

When I first took it their for this issue they replaced my valve cover gaskets, they said they were warped and leaking oil and they also changed the valve covers and timing cover with gasket. They said this caused the codes. Well three days back from the dealer it came back on when I was getting on the engine a little one night. Same two codes came back up.

Anyone have any ideas? Im thinking OXY Sensors or Cat

Still sounds like vacuum leak or perhaps faulty MAF, very unlikely to have two oxygen sensors go down at the same time. Mixture control is done with the pre cat sensors, so cat will have no affect.

Thanks ill make sure ill tell the dealer this when It gets dropped off next week.

Where are the common vacuum leaks on this engine? I have a twin turbo/supercharged cobra and one time I had a vacuum leak and that was a pain in the A$s to find.

OK update.....not sure if this is related but I removed the oil dipstick and a hissing noise got softer the hole was sucking in air. When I covered the hole up with my thumb the hissing noise got louder noticeable louder. Not sure if this helps anyone?

Bought new ccvs will see what that does.

stuartjohn24 12-04-2012 09:29 AM

Hi, sorry I assumed you had already changed those with the valve cover gaskets.

Have you popped the caps off to see the diaphragms? You should have a hissing noise from the dipstick hole if you remove it. Not if the dipstick is in though!

Took 13 min to install now going to clear code and ....we wait.

Fioxy 12-04-2012 12:59 PM

i've been having the same issue lately, after resetting the code it comes back on after 40 miles worth of driving, recently replaced the CCVs and still the light came back. Let me know how this goes!

SilversnakeBMW 12-04-2012 01:43 PM

ok ill let you know what gives. I have about 20 miles on it right now. It seems to be fine. usually takes a couple more of start ups to see if something is wrong again.

Have you checked vacuum lines with some carb spray?

johndade 12-04-2012 03:00 PM

What about the air pipes? With the new updated version

chp10_8 12-04-2012 03:17 PM

Vacuum leaks are a pain on this car, grab some carb cleaner and spray away, also clean the AFM and try that

cmpcpro 12-04-2012 03:22 PM

Afm?

I put the car to bed for the night unless I go to downtown orlando for some drinks tonight, but as of now the light is still off and I put 35 miles on her today. Shes still under warranty but i spent the 60 bucks out of my pocket today so im not out of my ride for a day or two no biggie. Seems right now the problem is gone hopefully the light stays off. If it comes back on I already have an appointment with the dealer for monday mourning. If the light stays off I wont go. Fingers crossed!

SilversnakeBMW 12-05-2012 09:50 AM

Well so far so good....fingers still crossed. I should know something 100% by saturday if this solution is fixed, but as of right now its start up is smooth and driving response is like new again I think this did the trick.

Vacuum lines are fine I believe as they were all smoke tested. Glad to see yours is looking good. I had mine come back on today when I went to change from D to R rather rapidly after 30 miles of driving with the same fault codes as yours. Perhaps mine is just a bit sensitive!

SilversnakeBMW 12-06-2012 08:26 AM

Light back on....same codes

SilversnakeBMW 12-08-2012 12:52 AM

dealer on monday ..ill see what they say...either way will have a solution to the problem :)

SilversnakeBMW 12-10-2012 12:22 PM

Car was dropped off at the dealer last night! Lets see what they come up with.

SilversnakeBMW 12-11-2012 07:54 PM

ok i get my car back tomorrow they said the vacumm pump something with a seal went bad. So their going to reseal it they said and ill have the car back tomorrow that was throwing the 2 codes..vacuum leak.

stuartjohn24 12-12-2012 12:13 PM

Interesting, thanks for the update. Could you ask the dealer exactly what was leaking? Are they referring to the vacuum pump oring seal between the pump and upper timing chain cover?

Wait... so what are my possibilities of this being? It just came on and I know the valve cover gaskets are leaking. both of them.
