having some issues with my 89

I'm having some issues with my 89 535i
they include low idle that gets my car to stall while sitting at a light.
the oil light flickers before it stalls out and the idle drops below 800 then to 500 ?
any ideas ?

The oil light will come on when there's low oil pressure which happens at low rpms. If your not really low on oil, your problem has nothing to do with the oil light.

What are the recent things you've done to it?
How caught up on maintaince are you?

Hey
We have just purchased this vehicle so i am not sure about the maintenance up keep of the vehicle.
But we have changed the spark plugs to ngk ones after we found out the old Bosch ones were fouled with a yellow color on them.
We are going to replace the ICV and the FPR tomorrow.
There was a small vacuum leak at the FPR but we have replaced it with no change to our situation.
The starter also just gave out on us today, hoping to get that fixed soon.
We have also ran seafoam through the engine and has only made a noticeable difference to performance of the engine, but still no change to idle condition.
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks

Please look through the maintenance sticky thread at the top of this list. Here is the direct link :

Also, download and familiarise yourself with the Bentley manual for E34s. And finally, please check out the troubleshooting tables found at this link :

All the problems with this car are fortunately just a matter of money, time, and intelligence. Welcome to the car.

As mentioned, the car needs some maintenance. Valve adjustment, filters and fluids. I would GO BACK to a plain old Bosch Super plug, that is what works best in this engine.

I would replace the O2 sensor, buy the $12 socket tool, makes it easy. Could be lots of other things. Wires, cap, rotor, fuel injectors, ICV....

Before buying an ICV, try cleaning it.

You should be able to rotate it quickly, from side to side, and feel the "Thing" in side moving.
What happens is, the "thing" gets buggered up, (froze), and viola, bad idle.

Carb cleaner should make it behave.
If it still won't shake, time for a new one.

Good luck.

Also check the resistance of the ICV unit through it's full movement. It might have a dead spot.
