”BMW M Unveils BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition Model”

BMW Motorsport returned to the DTM in 2012 after almost 20 years away, and the results in its comeback year exceeded all expectations. Canadian driver Bruno Spengler won the drivers’ title, BMW Team Schnitzer finished in top spot in the team standings, and BMW claimed the manufacturers’ honors.

BMW M GmbH is celebrating this success with the unveiling of the BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition. Mimicking the looks of Spengler’s racing car, this special-edition model is available exclusively in Frozen Black metallic, while the carbon flaps and gurney, various dark chrome elements, matt black wheels and sections of the race car’s livery also betray its close links with the triumphant BMW M3 DTM. The theme is continued by the BMW M stripe design over the CFRP roof and boot lid, BMW M logo to the rear of the front wheel arches and decals in the rear side windows.

Inside the car, the door sill strips replicate Spengler’s helmet design and the carbon-fibre interior trim strip bears the newly crowned champion’s signature and the car’s serial number.
The special-edition model also contains various exclusive interior additions, such as the Alcantara® steering wheel, handbrake lever embroidered with “M Power” lettering, and extended black Novillo leather trim with features in contrasting Palladium Silver.

Technical elements like the Competition package, M Drive, M DCT Drivelogic and the M Driver’s Package underline the car’s focus on high performance. Equipment including the Professional navigation system, heated seats and Park Distance Control add more “everyday” ingredients to the model.

BMW M is also offering the 54 new custodians of the BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition – which will be available in various international markets – a very special extra. Owners of this automotive rarity will have the chance to attend the BMW M Fascination Nordschleife driver training course under the watchful eye of Bruno Spengler. One of the most coveted elements of the BMW Driving Experience programme, the course is held on the Nürburgring’s legendary Nordschleife track, where BMW M cars are put through extremely exacting testing sessions and final chassis tuning is carried out.

The BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition will be built at BMW’s Regensburg plant and the BMW M GmbH factory from February 2013. Prices in Germany start from €99,000.00 including VAT.

Wow. Gorgeous.

It seems like BMW has a lot of love for the current M3. Most cars are quietly phased out while the new models get all the attention, not so with the M3 and it's countless number of special editions but who can blame them, it's a fantastic car and obviously the darling of the M-division and BMW as a whole. It's so good that E100k is only ridiculous since the standard edition is so decently priced for the car it is. It does look great.

Nice looking M3. I really like the carbon fiber trim. Unlike the recent Lime Rock edition, at least there's a number (1 of..)

Definitely but I'm not sure I can reason the near 100k price tag for a 5 yr old design. I'm interested in the next gen M3 with the twin turbo 6. All in all though, This m3 is a real stunner.

Agreed, $100k is a bit high for an M3 that most likely will not appreciate in value. Perhaps I'm mistaken.

I am also very interested in the upcoming M3/M4 but most likely would wait until the LCI.

It seems like the new M3 will be a give and take kind of deal. Pretty much as the E9X M3 gave us a 100% M exclusive engine and one of the best engines to ever appear in a non exotic it also gained some unwanted weight. It looks like the new M3 will follow the new M5's more cost efficient approach to tune a volume engine with some goodies as larger turbo chargers. It could also come with a less natural steering feel due to EPS but it is rumoured to drop the weight gained with the E9X. I think it will be a mixed feelings experience when we take our first drive in it. I absolutely adore the S65 and can't imagine buying a car with less steering feel than the current M3 however the rumoured weight reduction can do wonders. I just hope they keep the mechanically adjustable side-bolsters that are integral to the superb comfort and support of the E9x M3's seats. The E9x M3 is a tall order to improve on and I don't mean secondary "chrstmas tree" stuff as the size of the i-idrive screen, HUD, leather dash etc, etc. but core driving dynamics and sports feel. Above all let's hope it's doesn't follow the volume lines evolution to become a softer luxury cruiser.

That interior is stunning. I don't know why BMW is trying their best to squeeze the most sales out of this gen M3 with special/limited editions while people are anxiously awaiting the next.

Do not like.

Delete:
- stripe
- ridiculously large M emblems
- stickers in windows

Keep
- you may have one small plaque containing reference info for special edition
- alcantara wheel
- ZCP

Add
- a subtle but effective aero package (lip or splitters, side sirts, smoother underbody tray, rear winglet)

Edit: maybe this is what they are talking about with 'carbon flaps'?

- BMW performance exhaust

Otherwise not bad as a car, but E100k? No way...

To make money. Everybody does this.

Um more like $130,000 in the states if pricing is equivalent. But yeah.

This is getting silly.

+1

I would add to the "Keep" list the interior carbon trim and stitching on the seats. Nice touch with the black interior.

I just cannot complain about M.
I like them all, this one included; but I won't give up my M3 or GTR anytime soon.

For 130K the Cerrara S is a real deal competitor here.

This seems like another dress up kit that BMW is making to milk the M franchise even more.

I wish instead of adding tacky stickers and the already available areo carbon add ons, they would produce a quality lightweight exclusive that performs (ahem... E46 CSL).

Even the E92 GTS can't be compared to the E46 CSL because they practically have the same lap time around the ring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C3%BCrburgring_lap_times). The more powerful GTS should have been faster if only it was less heavy- but I digress.

I agree. Including the recent Lime-Rock (LRE) model, all limited releases are simply trim changes. I would be nice to see a CSL or in the case of the former 330i, a ZHP variant.
