PDC Aftermarket License Plate Kit

Dealer installed Park Distance Control BMW Part # 66210395009 Module which mounts on the rear license plate of my 2010 525i. Initially the alarm sounded continuously as soon as the car was put into reverse. A follow up trip to the dealer discovered the unit was installed too close to main power feeds which were causing feedback and keeping the unit on. Now working OK, but I was wondering if anyone knows the range of these units.? Previously I had a 3 series with PDC factory installed and it seems the operating range was much longer. This new system only starts beeping when an obstacle is about 3 feet from the bumper. is that normal? Can this distance be changer to make the unit more sensitive?

The OEM version, on at least most models, has sensors spread across the bumper. This gives a much wider and probably deeper coverage area than anything you could put just on the license plate holder because they are aimed straight back. I'd be really surprised if you could get it any better than it is with the add-on system. These things are ultrasonic (as opposed to optical or radar), so the only interference that might show up is if it was aimed incorrectly. If it points too far down, rather than out, that would affect it's ability to work (could have been reflecting off the bumper) as would too far up where it may have been reflecting off of the trunk lid or trim pieces. I think mine starts to alert when it's around 5', but don't quote me on that!

My guess is it was pointed up since license plates are tilted up slightly.

Thanks for the comments. The system seems to be working OK, I am just curious to learn if the unit has any adjustment on the range of operation. Five feet would be great if it were possible. As I said right not the beeps start at about 3 feet.
