110K on a Manual 03' 530i - what to look for?

Hi-

In my search for a 2003 530i in Topaz Blue/Gray w/ a Manual I have come across a 03' 530i Manual with Sport/Premium with 109,500 miles - Blue water metallic/Gray Int. - a nice combo too

It's located 5 hours form me I'm in LA this is up north near San Francisco. Trying to decide if its worth the trip to see in person.

This is silly but for some reason I have a lot of hesitation with a car at 110K vs. 90K! I guess because I only drive 7-10 k yrly and I look at the difference as 2 yrs. of ownership.

Any words of advice on this is appreciated - On what to look for at this mileage. I know it basically comes down to how the car has been maintained.

90-120K about when these cars need major servicing. You know it is about maintenance, so go with your head and look for work done on cooling system, thrust arm/control arm bushings etc
Honestly I would probably pick the car with better paint/interior and do the cooling overhaul myself.

Service history is the key. Understand what you are getting into. 90 - 110K is the point of major maintenance. A well maintained car is better than a good looking car.

With so many M54 engines using a qt of oil every 1500 miles, be sure to ask about oil consumption. Owner should be able to tell you how often they add oil.

Excess oil consumption is very often due to a failing CCV. The CCV fails due to clogging from oil condensate, which occurs from short drives in cold weather on a cold engine.

Perhaps, but far too many have changed their CVV multiple times w/o impacting oil consumption....there is something else going on with the M54 engines.

A qt of oil between oil change is normal for M54. I would be more concern with maintenance history of the car.

The main areas to keep a eye on are

Cooling System
Control Arms etc.
Window Regulators.

A bad/ failing Ccv will cause severe problems for the car later on, if not in the near future...
I HIGHLY recommend fixing it ASAP...!
