RPM Fluctuation Shifting into Drive/Reverse

Hey all,

I'm experiencing a dip in RPMs every time I shift out of P/N into D/R. It holds steady at 600 RPM while in idling in drive, but if I apply the brake and shift into reverse the RPMs drop to around 400 but immediately pop back up to 600. The engine doesn't like it, nor do I. It makes a sound like it's being smothered, but only for half a second during the dip.

Has anyone experienced this? Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

When you shift into gear, you are applying a load to the engine. So the idle speed drops. THe ECU sees this and adjusts, causing the ilde speed to come up.

Something is causing this to happen. Other BMWs I've driven have no distinct engine rpm change at the shift from park to drive or reverse. Sure they will decrese in RPM from park to drive, but mine actually drops and makes the engine act like it's going to stall, but only for a moment.

I was explaining why it would happen.

Yes, typically the system takes care of this faster, so you don't see the drop.

Sorry, half answers when I am online form work. :)

This happens to me as well on my e34 540i someone was tell me it could be the camshaft position sensor or the throttle position sensor
I haven't changed them out yet. But one time the engine actually stalled on me when I put in reverse. The ECU didn't save it in time
