2 Factory Recall Letters Received...

So I got two Recall letters on Wednesday from BMW:

1. Comfort Seating
2. Auto Park feature

Taking her in next week.

I got two myself but they were different. One for cars with comfort access and soft close (doors can open on their own) and the other one was for "runaway BMW"....something about comfort access cars being accidentally put into neutral if the start button is pressed a few times quickly when shutting the car off. They claim the car can go into neutral instead of park. Did you ever get these recalls?

Seems like there are two new ones now.

Got them both yesterday. Interestingly enough letter sent said that the door issue could have been happening with any obvious evidence.

You are covered!

The letter I got said they are still working on the software update for the rollaway problem. I doubt they'll be able to do anything for you next week.

+1

The way I read the letter ...

"if you a moron, and jab at the start stop button repeatedly and then watch/ignore the car move from Drive to Neutral, and knowingly leap out of the car while the car is in Neutral, it could roll away"

"we're working on a software patch that will cover ourselves from litigous idiots, which will be ready soon"

Well from what I read people were parking their cars only to have them roll away later.. I thought they were going into N after putting them in P? Also, you have to remember, most people ARE morons :)

I have never used the "Auto Park" feature for fear of electronics failing or worse....

well the worst part about it is that the brake lights don't shine so someone could rear end you accidentally.

Dutch750i 12-15-2012 04:29 PM

So what did the recall in regards to the comfort say, got one for the "rollaway" , but not for the comfort, depends on the year born?

These recall letters, are they for a specific model range and or year, also is it just the American market or euro market too?

Hmmm... Some of these half-wits probably rely on me braking to tell them to STOP.

Do you or anyone here use this function?

I used it a few times when my leg would get sore in traffic. It's a very nice feature, but like you I always wondered if it would fail.

I always wondered if the brake lights lit up. Can't believe they don't.

I never really liked Auto-Park. The delay of the disengagement and taking off really made stop-and-go traffic really choppy.

tmeis745 12-15-2012 09:56 PM

Is this a recall in Canada?

tmeis745 12-15-2012 10:07 PM

Confirmed its also a Canadian recall, affecting 2004-2007. Good thing mine is an 02

Tenn 12-16-2012 05:38 AM

I called my dealer in Nashville and after leaving 4 voice messages with the service department to make an appointment someone called me back and said I was the first call about the recalls and they would get back to me next week when they learn something about how to repair these 2 issues. I was told that BMW Corporate had not told them anything about the recall! UH-OH!

1bad540 12-16-2012 06:52 AM

The roll away is a recall but seems that they dont have the fix yet. I dont think its caused by jabbing at the start botton, but thats what there saying.

SuperSnoop 12-16-2012 07:45 AM

They're saying that pushing the start button multiple times quickly will cause the car to go into an "emergency" mode used for towing. It will basically put the car in neutral. I have t tested to see if that actually happens. I know I've jabbed at the start button a few times since you have to push it twice to turn the car off. Sometimes I forget to take my foot off the brake, which means that second puts starts the car right back up. The fix is scheduled for March, so there's not much point in scheduling an appointment now.

I use it, but I also tap on the brake just a little to let them know I'm stopped.
