Newbie with IS issue
hi everyone,
this is my first post on this forum. ill just intro the ladies. i have two beautiful but rusty beauties at home. one bronze 318 2 door and the other is a white 318IS. i just bought the IS a week ago. its not at the moment. The guy i bought it from dont know why the engines is not running so he got rid of it. She (white one) is a pretty rough state now. I'm still a newbie so i have no idea to diagnose the symptoms. When started, the engine turns over and it is followed with a CLUNK and it shuts off. One of my friend told me its either something minor or major issue which wasnt any help at all. LOL. some friend i got.... If anyone can assist me with this or have any thoughts, I'd be privileged.... Looking forward for replies. Cheers |
Really need more info then that.

check compression first off
|
Plugs out and turn engine by hand a few revs. Then you would get a feel for any valves vs piston problems. Then compression check dry and wet - then got back to us..
|
Should I turn the ignition on?
|
No

Most probably broken piston bearing. Taking up the DIY. Any advice?
|
pistons dont have bearings. i would start watching alot of horsepowertv on spiketv.com under powerblock.

Just drained the oil. The bottom of the pan had metal filings. No chunks.
What's next to do? |
Just drained the oil and found metal filings.
No compression test done. Opened the cover and the plastic next to the timing chain has slightly damaged. Right amount of oil inside it when drained. The air intake hose was damaged. What's next? Should I still do compression test? |
Read my words - IF if does not clunk when turned over by hand do a compression check wet and dry. Metal shavings in the oil not a good sign. Engine could be very dead.

Compression is 13.5 bar. It turns over nice but backfires every time I don't leave the throttle open.
There is sparks. Wires are plugged properly to the distributor. Need more help... |
Btw. The timing was off and my mate helped me out in position before compression test.
|
if its backfiring, you could have cylinder unloading. running rich so one power stroke the spark is put out, but on the second one, it lights causing backfire. which if thats the case, fuel pressure test
