No 1,200 break-in oil change?
 
I believe it is required for the M5, but I can't find it in the X5M manual. The dealer was also talking about getting the full power mode turned on after the 1,200 mile oil change (again an M5 thing?). Also, the manual says not to exceed 5,500rpm for the first 1,200 miles whereas for the 50i limit is 4,500rpm. I thought ///M engines had strict babying rules when new, but it seems to be just the opposite. Any thoughts?

Hm dunno. Yes for M3 also, the current edition E9x S65 anyways.

Curious it's not in the service manual for the car?

The Service Manual states the X5M has Condition Based Service and to check the Vehicle Status in the iDrive, which states 15,000 miles until the next oil change.

I too would like the answer to this. At the dealer they said not to go over 4000 RPM or 100MPH...

Still no answer on this? I am wondering too. Maybe I need to drop by the service department and ask. No mention of it in the book that comes with the car. A quick Google search shows many x5m and x6M owners reporting that these cars are not subject to the 1200 mile service and do not come with the break in limiter in place. This seems to be in line with my observation that my car has no limiter in place and you can redline it if you wish (I have not done this and am keeping it under 4k rpm until 1200 miles).

Same here! Under 4k rpm and under 100mph

I've had several M cars and all required engine and differential oil changes at 1,200 miles. I think our X5M motors are closely related to the 2013 M5 motor so I will pay to have the dealer change the engine oil at ~1200 miles; perhaps the dif too.

So, does the lack of a break-in oil change and a higher break-in rpm limit mean the X5M/X6Ms are better prepared/tested at the factory than the other M cars?

I normally break-in my cars hard on the Autobahn within minutes of leaving BMW Welt. I haven't had any issues, but I only have three data points so far. In Feb/Mar, I'll add another. ;)

I have PCD coming up for my X6M, I've been wondering about this and am hoping the guys at the PCD will be able to shed some light on it. Especially since I have a kick ass road trip planned right after the PCD !!!

That's what I always wondered; people get their ED and mash on the autobahn straight out of the shoot with no problems. I'll definitely go the ED route on the next one!

Though id jump in since im at 1000k miles with my 5.0 just about ready to have some fun:D
This should wet your appitite for a hot minute....notice the throttle control to keep it just at and not go beyond the recommended 4500rpm for the 5.0:p
Hope u guys get some more posters in 2013 i can certainly chime in till u get up to speed.

The X5M has been around for three years and this forum only had 40 posts prior to the recent December buyers, so it will be a long road to get a healthy level of activity around here. Please remember, this isn't the F30 forum, so everyone is welcome here! :beerchug:

I like your exhaust note! That's how I'm hoping my 6er will sound. The X5M is a bit too loud under hard acceleration to be socially acceptable, but under normal conditions its quite reasonable.

I also reached 1,000 miles just yesterday on the way home and YES, I have nailed it from time to time. I keep hearing from the passenger seat "you went over 5,500rpms again" and "I like it when it makes the brap sound when shifting." If you guys don't already know this yet, Mrs D & I commute together, so she provides ample material for quotes. :D

As far as challenges, I think you have great upset potential against any high powered RWD car. I think RWD 550's might be be easy pickings. :drive:

i almost bought this instead of grey...my ML63 nightmare talked me out of it. i hate washing cars . 2 kids equal almost never happening! LOL

side not love the brushed aluminum interior, i have that damn Dark bamboo thats in every other X5 so im going to have don nguyen wrap the wood

Me too :D I have a few more data points, including a 997 TT and a RS6, and have never had a problem with any of the ED cars or had any that burned oil. The 650 vert had the Vmax limiter exorcised an hour after leaving the Welt and it burns the "normal" quart every 4K miles.

The real issue with break-in is heat cycling the tires and bedding the brakes before romping on it; not the engine.

Hmmm, maybe we should swap trim: my 2013 X5M has the faux carbon fiber leather trim and I prefer the wood.

Haha, it's my first M so I didn't wanna screw it all up. I've had moments of weakness but all in all I was pretty well disciplined...until tonight! I couldn't wait for a reply so I tried it in the freeway and once from a stop. I was all smiles!

I picked up my X6M at PCD on Thursday and asked several people about this.

Even though our X ///M engines are similar to the new M5's and M6's, the transmissions are obviously completely different. Apparently the M automatic transmission in our cars doesn't need as much babying. There is no 1200 mile service according to techs and the manual. The car does not indicate one in the settings menu, either. That being said I am still thinking I may do an oil change around 3000 miles.

Now, there have been lots of questions (not necessarily in this thread) about our cars being ran on a dyno at the factory to the hilt, etc. I asked about this on the factory tour, as we passed by the place where this happens. It's actually not a dyno, because it does not measure horsepower or torque; however, it's otherwise a similar device. They called it a treadmill. I was told they do not run the cars to redline, they shift early, but they do run it to maximum speed of the car. So our X ///M's were ran to 155mph, apparently.

I am not 100% familiar with the gearing yet, so I am not sure what RPM's it takes to be at 155mph in 6th gear in an X6M - anyone who's tried it, let me know :D Suffice it to say I was told what they do at the factory doesn't constitute or replace a break-in of the engine how you will be driving it after 1200 miles - lets face it, otherwise we wouldn't have bought an ///M!

For my break-in (completed 1148 miles within 2 days of owning the car and then hit 1200 on the morning of the 4th day :supdude:) I went along with their suggestions of

- 5500 rpm max
- don't floor it (avoid "transmission kickdown mode", something I learned on another forum)
- no cruise control or constant speed
- do not exceed 100mph (I have a feeling this is for us, not the car)
- various road conditions, stop and go traffic, mountain roads, used all gears in all RPMs up to max

I did exceed 5500rpm a couple of times accelerating and neither confirm nor deny possibly having exceeded 100mph here and there :D As I passed the 500 mile mark I started using more heavy throttle down to 3/4 and then, nearer to 1000 miles, close to, but not quite flooring it. Since I was also driving in manual mode the whole time - because why not! - this helped avoid the kick down mode. Always linear buildup of revs in the current selected-by-me gear.

As soon as I hit 1200 miles, I opened her up gradually to 6500 RPMs in 1st and 2nd gears, then 3rd and 4th on the freeway while entering or passing for some brief moments. Holy mother of god! Let us just say that entering and merging onto a freeway is nearly as easy and quick as on my Ducati Diavel 162hp (0-60 in 2.9 seconds, some say 2.5 actually, either way, it's FAST) motorcycle! I still have not really floored it, done a proper 0-60, used launch control, or pinned it for long periods of time. I am gradually introducing some more aggressive driving as the miles tack on.

My car still doesn't feel quite as aggressive as the X6M I drove at the PCD but it's getting there. I got to stomp on that thing in 1st gear to the floor and we devoured the tiny front straight at BMWs handling course in what I could only describe as warp speed. It was unreal. Couldn't even floor it in 2nd completely or we would've been off the track! That car had just over 10,000 miles on it. The PCD guys did confirm that the M cars at the BMW Performance Driving School don't go into full duty until they're at 1200 miles.

All in all, this thing is such a beast that even during break-in there is no shortage of power in almost any gear. Passing almost anyone after a quick downshift from 5th to 4th at 80mph brought my self-defined 100mph "speed warning" chime REAL fast.

In summation, this car freaking rocks!! :bigpimp:
