E39 and SmartPhone - How to connect?
I got an E39 with a CD rack in the boot, but now I also got a smart phone with lots of music.
What is the easiest way top connect the smart phone to the stereo? Bloothtooth? USB connection? |
For my iphone, I have a usaspec module that replaces the cd changer. It lets you use the steering wheel controls and charges the phone. I dont miss the charger at all. I also have a parrot Bluetooth connector for the phone. Very handy and highly recommended.

I've seen the charger that replaces the dip in your armrest for iPhones but can't find them to buy anywhere the dealership says there is no such thing but I've seen them anyone know what I'm talking about n if so where can I get one

I have a unit that takes the place of your cd changer and you can plug in your ipod. I forget the brad right off hand but I believe a ice unit? anyways Id let it go for the right amount

What year is the e39? If it's a 2003, you can plug in a cable to the back of the radio/CD player in the dash which will give you an AUX input. If it's not a 2003, you can change the radio/CD player to a later model one.

The build date for compatibility with later (satellite radio compatible) E39 sound systems was supposed to be Sept. 2002. However, if your proposed setup needs the newer system and your build date is even close to Sept. '02, then get your VIN to a dealer and they will be able to tell you which system your car really has. Mine was built Sept. '02 but does not have the newer radio.
Also, my DICE Mediabridge (Bluetooth, satellite, USB) has never worked consistently despite numerous software updates and one complete replacement. It locks up and needs hard re-booting occassionally, so I had an under-dash kill switch installed to reboot the DICE unit while driving. When working, DICE is nice, but you do lose your rear CD magazine player. |

You do have to remove the radio to attach the cable, but this radio is amazingly easy to remove. It takes only a couple of minutes. Here's a link to a DIY to hooking up the cable. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1202510 I drilled a small hole in the cup holder and used that as the location for the AUX jack. Here's another link showing the final location of the jack. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1236285 It also shows you how to make the cable itself, however, they aren't very expensive, so I just bought one. It works great.

It does not allow you to make handsfree calls, maybe some kind of adapter would work with it? I have an iPod adapter for a E39 that can be functioned with the steering wheel controls and head unit.
I bought it some years ago - but since have replaced it with a high end audio / video system. I think i paid $100 (maybe more?) - ill sell it for $50 shipped. |

Good write-up. I did the same thing several years ago. Pretty much the same location, but I didn't put on the faceplate to make it more stealth, no problems. I would get the right angle plug, looks like that will eventually cause issues and broken wire, especially when it's very cold outside (thin wire gets brittle).

Good thread and nice install Severe. PO of my car did a sweet iPod integration in the center column, DICE I think. So I'm set on music.
It's never been a huge priority, but would be nice to make hands free calls from Android phone. Has technology progressed to the point of a simple, affordable option? The Argos kit BavAuto sells sounds complicated, and the price knocked me off my chair. My M5 is 2002 so I can't get the one that just plugs in to the connector in the trunk. |
