If you want to read just generic codes, any good-quality scan tool will suffice.

If you want to read BMW-specific codes, the price jumps by a factor of 20 or more.

I have an AutoXray EZ Scan 6000. Very well-made tool. It decodes the code into English, and displays real-time data, sometimes useful for diagnostics.

Actron makes a nice tool, too, but I have no experience with it.

If I needed one now, I'd buy the 7000: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss...xray%20scanner

I'd stay away from Harbor Freight Tools.

- Where to get a cheap OBDII DTC scanner (1) (2) or a better scanner (1) or the best diagnostic tools (1) (2) (3)

I use the Peake tool and it's worked well for me.

The term "Best" is equal to how much $$$ you want to spend. Really. Starting with a Harbor Fright $15 reader to a $700 laptop set up like http://www.bavariantechnic.com/default.aspx
