engine overheating and causes coolant reservoir to burst
I have a 2006 BMW X5 and I just had my car towed due to the coolant reservoir bursting and leaking coolant everywhere. This happened while the car was parked and the engine was running. I did not see any warning and the temperature gauge on the dashboard did not show the engine was hot or about to overheat.

Could someone help identify possible root causes for this? I am suspecting there is an issue with either the engine fan or the sensor controlling the engine fan failed causing the engine to overheat. Which sensor controls the engine fan?

Yeah, you have a head gasket leak and the combustion gas blew up the reservoir. You can have the shop pressurize the system once they replace the reservoir, but if it can't maintain pressure be prepare to bend over.

Expansion tanks are a documented weak link. They become brittle with time/heat cycles and crack. You likely do NOT have a head gasket issue. When the tank fails, the cooling system can't hold pressure, and the coolant will overheat.
