Whirring noise when braking/turning
Hello I wondered if anyone can help me with a problem on my wife's X5 35d 2009. Car has been excellent but rather expensive on fuel tyres and servicing.
Vehicle is now 2 years and 50000 miles old. Over the last 15000 miles the car has developed an annoying whirring noise from the dash area when turning or braking. It is most noticeable when the car is warm and louder if braking and steering at the same time. There is no vibration only the noise. I have had it back to the BMW dealer a couple of times and they have made some effort to rectify the fault including changing the front brake backplates but this hasn't helped. The Warranty is about to run out and I don't want to end up with a big repair bill in the future.
Many thanks and kind regards

My wife recently noticed the samething on my '09. I would like to know what it is as well. It does seem to be related to the fan for the climate control

Yes you are right. It is somehow related to the climate fan. Regards

Mine '10 X5d has the same problem but only happens on the cold days (below 32 F). I agree it is related to the climate fan. The sound is gone when you turn off the climate control. I sent the car in yesterday but couldn't duplicate the sound with the tech.

^^ Same here, was in for service and couldn't duplicate the noise.

fan motor?

13,000 miles on my 08, and it does the same thing. Only when it's very cold, mostly when slowly turning, or sometimes just when I brake. I can live with it, but this has got to be a know issue, able to duplicate or not, they need to have a fix. Maybe replace the fan motor with one that isn't defective? Unless BMW meant for us to drive with and resident cricket in the car. I will say, this is not the first car I've had with this issue. Then again, it wasn't a $60,000 BMW either.

Finally have it fixed yesterday. According to the technician, it was the blower motor for the climate control fan who made the noise when braking/turning in the cold days. Replaced it under warranty. No cost :)

^^ Yup, mine is back to the dealer, I was able to capture the sound on my iphone and they said its the blower.
