HELP! Transmission Problems-EMT Light, Limp Mode

Hi All-

I really need some help. I have a 1998 528i with 97,000 miles on it. Periodically the check engine light will come on and sometimes after this the traction light comes on and the car goes into limp mode. When this happens I pull over and turn the car off for 10 to 15 minutes and restart it. Usually it then runs normally. I had the transmission fluid changed which seemed to help lower the frequency of this malfunction but it still does it every so often.

Another problem with the transmission is when I put the car in drive it usually takes about 2 seconds for the transmission to engage.

I don't have a lot of money and can't afford to do major repairs on the car. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Mark

1. Pull the engine codes
2. Run the alternator and battery tests to check for proper function
3. Run the tranny codes using a more sophisticated scanner (GT-1, etc.)

Do a search on this site for more info.

Thanks Fudman. I'm kind of a rookie when it comes to running codes and I don't have the scanners to do so. But, based on your reply, are you saying it's probably a computer or electrical problem instead of a mechanical one. If it is, I'll be pretty relieved. Thanks again for the help. Mark

The tranny limp mode can be triggered by an electrical issue. Who did your ATF change? Are you SURE they did it properly? Buy yourself a cheap scanner ($20). You won't regret it. Then pull the codes. If nothing is there, perform the battery and alternator check using the MID. If neither of these reveals the problem, have the tranny scanned. There are detailed threads on all of these issues. Do a search to learn more.

Thanks Fudman. Will do and let you know how it goes. Mark
