2007 X3 rear springs
 
I see several posts about broken rear springs. Both my rear springs are broken, one just the end piece but another one is broke in 3 places. I don't want to lower the car any more using the Eibach springs like some have done. I would like a beefier spring so it doesnt happen again. The dealer wants $170 per spring. Found a company on ebay selling a new set for $169 which is 1/2 the price with free shipping, Made by Lesjofors??

Any suggestions where to buy or is there a better, stronger replacement spring. I carry quite a bit of weight in my trunk at all times and have had problems with rear tire wear...assume now it was caused by the broken springs

Genuine BMW replacement springs for 148 at Tischer BMW.
This is where I buy all of my replacement parts if I want to stay with original.

I would go with the eBay over the OEM, which you know will eventually break again anyway.

I would stay away from eBay.

I am wondering what the part number is and if they are interchangable with any other models.

I agree - this is one of those cases where BMW appears to have had a supplier with what seems like questionable product quality over a number of years.

Might be the rear suspension design itself, but not a convincing case for insisting on exactly the same spring to replace a broken one.

I would be more comfortable with an alternate one as long as the maker has a good track record.

Don't know if the O.E. ones were Stumpp or not, but if they were it looks like they came out of a Slovakian plant.

The Lesjofors ones could be from several countries, including China as always seems to be the case now.

But worth a gamble I would say.

^or don't gamble and get the OEM one, do it right the first time will save you money later one. Maybe Tischer (link mlukas provided) will have a warranty on them??

So 'doing it right' is using an OEM part which is known to fail?

Unless you can find one that is known NOT to fail and has backing I would still go with OEM. Like I said, maybe Tischer will give a warranty with it. Or just upgrade to Eibach springs

From Tischers website:

Although I will say I went with Eibach Pro Kit springs because they were less expensive and I wanted to replace all four at the same time.
And Eibach has a 1 million mile warranty.

Both rear springs broke on my 2007 model. If I had known that Lesjofors made springs, I would have chosen those instead of OEM. IMO a reputable company with good products.

Bought the lesjofors, $169 for pair, half the cost of dealer, free shipping and received in 2 days, they are made in Sweden

The ends are thicker than the original so I'm hoping they are stronger

As the broken rear spring problem seems to affect all X3 model years, and other BMW models too, it is good that those possibly stronger Swedish Lesjofors are an option to O.E.

Was wondering if there is a best practice method of replacing them and came across a 3-series video that shows a way to avoid the crowbar method members here have used.

Makes use of the car's scissors jack to create space between the upper and lower mounts so the spring can easily be slid out and replaced.

Not sure if the X3 has the same areas where you could locate the jack base and the cradle, but looks less nerve-wracking than levering a spring out. Any thoughts?

I used a 4 ton Puller from Harbor Freight to spread it but the same idea as the video. Was a piece of cake to change. Was able to do it myself in no time

Pleased to hear that it was an easy job.

I read that Z4 owners who have to do theirs can just have a helper stand on the hub to get the necessary separation for spring removal.

That might work for the X3 as well, although a helper over 200 lbs. could be necessary.

Using the scissor jack is a great idea--I never thought of that! But please use jack stands--I've had a trolly jack like that one fail before.

Hey, I just replaced my rear brakes and noticed that both my rear springs are broken. Just a small piece is broken off. How dangerous is this? How long is it safe to drive before replacing?

Depends...mine are broken in exactly the same way and I've probably been driving on them for at least 20k km (didn't even realize anything was broken until I put the winters on and saw the pieces).

I already have the replacements but it's just too damn cold outside to put them in. :)

I have a 2007 X3. 58,750 miles. The rear springs were replaced around 50k under maintenance agreement, n/c.
I will be keeping an eye on the oem dealer part if they are known weak. The consistant break points concern me.
As far as Eibach and other after market; some offer stock ride height.
