1003 525i M-series won't start, sometimes
My car starts and runs fine, but without explanation, sometimes it won't start. When it won't start, the whole engine jolts from left to right, like it is hung up. (I've noticed some smoking from the tailpipe recently.)
I've learned if I take the key out and wait a minute, it may start. Other times, it won't start so I am concerned about getting stranded.
Any ideas of where to start looking for the problem?
It can be several thing. We need some background so we can help you.
Year, engine, and trans would be a helpful start.
To be general about it,
A no start or fouled start can come from emissions, fuel delivery, or even ignition.
From there it pretty much goes down hill. Since you stated it does try to start or you've actually got it going is good.
But with no specific info the answers you'll receive will be across the board and general at best.
ie. the 525 came with 2 powerplants: M20 and M50. Both are different animals but both are linear so some diagnosis would cover both. However when you get into ignition systems they use different components.
That said, again we need more info.
going to guess that is a typo and the 1003 is supposed to be 1993?

I had the same problem when my car still had an M52 in it. id turn the key and nothing happened, and then on the 3rd or 4th or maybe the 10th go the car would start again. i put a 750iL battery in it and never had the problem again for the next 3 or 4 months
