NOOBIE Question Microfilter
 

On my 2008 X3 is there a symbol for the Microfilter to be changed? or should it be done when Oil is changed?

No symbol. I change it when the oil change light goes off...approx every 15k miles.

No need to change it that often.50,000- 60,000 miles is OK.

Really? I completely disagree...this is the cabin air filter...the air you breath...and the filter becomes quite nasty after 15k or once a year. My 09 manual states change at every oil/inspection service..which is roughly every 15k miles/annually in BMWs interval counter.

You are right though with the engine air filter.

That's what I find too.

It will depend on your operating environment, but about once a year seems like as good a number as any.

I don't think any auto maker can put a dependable or meaningful time or miles recommendation on it.

The activated charcoal has a noticeable effect when travelling behind an oil burner, or a big block V8 that has just put their foot to the floor to merge onto the highway.

If the charcoal is no longer doing its job, that can be as good a sign as any to change the filter.

Agreed...post above fixed. The drawbacks of high milage driving...I never consider the year.

If that were the case why doesn't the dealer change it at 15,000 miles when the car is in warranty?:dunno:

If you were paying for it -- then the dealer would cheerfully change it!:rofl: However, under the "free" maintenance program they will only do what BMW will reimburse them for -- so if BMW won't pay for it -- then it doesn't get changed. Easy job BTW, just take out the old and drop in the new.:thumbup:

Confirming my maintenance records, the dealer changed the microfilter at each oil service (and Inspection I).

Are you sure your's didn't get done back then?

Might be at the dealer's discretion.

(That's one of the differences between a BMW oil service and a BMW oil change. Out-of-warranty owners are surprised when an oil service costs them about $250, but if they had requested an oil change it would have been about $130.)

Yep, I confirmed mine too. 6 oil changes to 100k and 6 micro filters (I had the 100k mile maint plan).

I think I figured it out....good old bmw changed the service in 2010, so you might have had a dealer not playing by your model years rules.
