transmission fluid change ????

i have an 86 bmw 325es 2.7l I6 i want to do a tranny fluid change and haven't done one on a manual transmission. can someone help me out with how to do it, what fluid to use and how much. thank you

theres two plugs on one of the sides of the tranny (cant remember), bottom one drains, top one fills. youll have to check to see what tranny you have since some take different fluid. theres a tag near the front that has the info.

once you got the fluid and drained out the old, put the bottom plug in and fill the top one until fluid starts coming out. then put upper plug in and your done

Thread tape on the plug to ensure no leaks.

I thought manual BMW never require a tranny fluid change, the manual says it lasts a life time. What are some symptoms of this needing to be done?

this is why reading the manual is bad. every fluid needs to be changed at some time for a longer lasting vehicle. the manual trannies are a longer service interval, its normally done the same time you get a diff service.

the newer cars are a dealer only service on the trannies. they use a machine that attaches to one of the cooler lines then the other to the radiator and it flushes out the fluid. but thats mainly on autos

driveshaft coupler sizes??

i have a 86 325es manual. how do i know if my tranny is built from 06/1986 125mm outer dia or from 05/1986 110mm outer dia. please let me know

downhiller 01-15-2013 06:09 PM

on the tag within the driver door, there will be the production date at the upper right hand corner (from sticker writing) itll be the month number/year. 86 was a split year. pre5/86 had the older tranny style, post6/86 had the newer tranny

01-86 is what it says so i have the 110mm ????? does that help at all with what fluid to put in the tranny
