2013 X5 50i in Production!

Hey Guys,
Been following this forum for sometime ever since we decided to purchase a new X5. It has been an invaluable resource through this entire process! All of you that contribute to the gain and transfer of knowledge and experience should be commended!

Well, heard today that she just went into production! Here are the details.

2013 X5 50i
Deep Sea Blue
Black Nevada (for the kids... 3 year old and 9 year old...nuff said)
Sport Activity Package
- Multi-Contour Seats
- Adaptive Drive
Premium Sound
Premium Package 2
Multi-Contour seats

Toughest part was figuring out if I really NEEDED adaptive drive. Well...I NEED it. :D

Some notes:
Wheels: I would have loved to go with the 20" wheels (style 336 I think) but with trips to the snow the 19s out of the sport package seemed more practical at the moment.

3rd row seating: The 3rd row seat...yes..if it were up to me I would have NOT added it but the wife does a lot of car pooling with kids (age 4-9) so it was a must. No cajoling from me could change her mind. Since she is the primary driver...she wins.

Adaptive Drive: I did a ton of research on this. Everything from board member opinions to how the system works to driving one vs. one without. For me, I love the sportiness of the X5 with adaptive drive. It isn't for everyone but for me, it really changed the attitude of the car. Midnight ice cream runs are going to have me and my wife fighting for the keys! Before it was a rock paper scissors thing...

Technology Package: Just wasn't worth it to us. The HUD is nice but for whatever reason, with sunglasses we were using (not sure if they were polarized) you could barely make it out. Changing the settings on the idrive to high didn't help. As soon as you put sunglasses on the HUD was washed out. Night time driving I'm sure would be useful. We nixed it. Money went to the dang 3rd row seating...lol

50i vs 35i vs Diesel:
For us, the 50i was hands down the best. No offfense to the other power plants as they are ALL sexy sweet but something about that V8 just stole the show. Torque, power, sound...in my opinion, worth the extra cash if it is within your budget. If budget is not there...there is no disappointment with the 35i or the diesel. They are both awesome engines.

So here we sit!

Rest assured...obligatory cold start video and pics WILL BE INCOMING once we get her home! :D

If it was me, I wouldn't let the dealer wash the car, or put those stickers which advertise the dealership.

I have requested this in the past as well, but unless you plan to hand wash the vehicle yourself during the entire ownership, it will not matter.

We also made a big deal about the dealership stickers. The guy was cool about it, said "Yeah we don't do that". The other dealership in town, which we initially went to and were totally disappointed in, does.

Regarding letting the dealer wash the car....thanks for the tips guys.

Just curious...out of those that allowed the dealer to wash the car...how many of you had issues with scratches/swirls...etc from a dealer car prep wash? I would assume that if they did damage the paint they would be responsible for rectifying any damage. Course...by then the deed is done...

Production completed yesterday! :)

According to the VIR transport status it has left or is scheduled to leave by rail to CA (via Norfolk Southern). Guess there isn't an easy way to track a train...

ETA is 13-Feb to Oxnard then I guess it goes by truck to the dealer. Anyone have any experience with the timeline? Is this pretty accurate?

Am I looking at the week of the 18th (Feb) for delivery?

Pretty sure my CA is happy its done as I have been bugging him for continuous production reports...lol

Thanks guys! Excitement is building!

Mine went into production on the 8th and I picked it up on the 25th it was at the dealer on the 23rd. Just for a timeline. Btw I love this forum. Kept me informed while I too was tracking my car everyday sometimes twice a day lol

Be sure to get the floor liners from BMW or Weather tech. I found that to be a good insurance against spills and just general dirts kids brings. Plus, it makes the car more SUV like.

Congratulation. Looks like you are on a fast track to a great drive. There are loads of good curvy around Bay Area. My favorite so far is near Steven's Creek Reservoir a road called Montebello. It is very curvy and hilly. I am talking about 10 mph turns following by many fun turns.

You will be certain to exercise that torque you have. Be warned. There are deers on that road. :yikes: So watch the side.

+1

We went with the BMW ones up front & the Weather Tech in the rear.

Front from Tischer BMW: http://www.getbmwparts.com/partlocat...catalogid=4462

Rear from Weather Tech: http://www.weathertech.com/bmw/2013/...er-digitalfit/

BMW rubber matts are said to be better than the liners.

They are of equal quality. We have had both. The liners retain rain water or snow better.

Hey Guys,
Quick update...

Car arrived at the VPC! Whoo hoo! :bigpimp:

I thought the train from Spartanburg to Oxnard would take longer. It was estimated to arrive on 2/13 but beat that and arrived 2/6. Estimate dealer arrival is 2/10.

Timeline so far:
Production start: 1/18
Production End: 1/28
Shipped on rail 1/29
Arrived at VPC 2/6

Pretty cool.
Gotta dust off the camera and video cam (cold start video of course)!

jonnyz1245 02-08-2013 09:29 AM

Congrats. Mine finished production yesterday. Looking at your timeline, mine should be on the west coast and at my dealer in the next 10-14 days!

MRV99 02-09-2013 12:17 AM

Of you have kids and you want to keep the backseat protected from the kid shrapnel. You need weathertech liners for row 2, and three and you will want the row two BMW seat covers. I can guarantee, the amount of stuff that gets caught by the liners and the seat covers will amaze you. I have a 7 and 4 year old and I would not think twice.

After the oil is warmed up, you want to be driving in DS mode for the break-in period.

Every car manual I have ever read, including BMW, says to vary RPM during break-in. You can only do that on DS mode.

????? We have had no issues varying RPM during break-in around town (stop & go traffic) or on the interstate in D (drive). DS (drive sport) mode revs higher than D (drive). Either way, in drive or drive sport one wants to avoid 4,500 RPM or higher for the first 1,500 miles.

The past 3 BMWs we have had the dealer perform a oil/filter change after break-in (1,500 miles). This was formerly standard practice for BMW, but is now only recommended for M cars.

Thats my point.

And from by 2008 BMW X5 manual, which is similar to other manufacturers in regard to break-in:

"Drive at changing engine and vehicle speeds, however do not exceed 4,500 RPM...."

Kzang 02-16-2013 10:53 AM

Wow it is so freaking easy to rev to 4,500 RPM and over with DS mode.
I would keep it in normal drive and vary your RPM.

RockChips 02-16-2013 11:27 AM

My D mode doesn't go above 2k.

Probably due to the fact that you have a 3.0si (N52 engine). weavom5 is taking delivery of a 50i (N63 engine) & Kzang has a 35i (N55 engine).
