335is and intake

Hello all,

I've ordered a 335is. Does anyone have any experience or opinions about getting ONLY an intake with a 335is, and not an ECU tune, exhaust, etc? Does it provide any benefit? I've read that maybe not...

The stock IS does not generate enough boost to make an intake system worthwhile. The factory CAI is more then adequate as delivered.

Enjoy it as is, great car! Why mess with a beauty :)

This.
Stock intake is not limiting on a factory stock engine.

Stay with stock intake if you are not tuning

There won't be any real noticeable difference except being able to hear the turbos a little more.

remap that ECU for an additional 80hp, best bang for the buck for a 335i

i have a 09 335i and I did afe intake and rennart 2.5" exhaust, it made a bid difference. The afe intake is around 500, it does't make a 500 dollar diff by it's self. On the other hand the more air you give a turbo the happier it is.

335IS is different

An intake will definitely help you with hp/torque gains as well as throttle response. As others have mentioned, you'll also hear the turbo spool a little more as well. I'd recommend that you check out the aFe Stage 2 Intake System for your BMW 335is N54.

The aFe Stage 2 Intake replaces the factory air box which allows for increased air flow. This modification will be an improvement over the stock box and on a stock car. It is also a great compliment to a aftermarket exhaust systems as well as aftermarket tunes. Another feature of the intake is the 16 gauge powder coated steel heat shield. A heat shield makes sure that the intake doesn't use the hot air around your engine and only allows the intake to receive cooler air, which adds more power. Not only does power increase, but many have observed an increase in MPG.

Please explain what you mean by this statement. As far as engine performance, there is nothing different about the N54 engine between a 335is and a 335i except that BMW has increased the boost slightly to produce an additional 20 HP, plus the additional 7 second torque boost, all done with the ECU. It is the same physical engine, the only difference is in the ECU.

P.S. on our 335is the letters are in lower case.

bear-avhistory 01-25-2013 03:24 PM

^^^^ And stock the 335i has even less need for an aftermarket air cleaner system then the 335is.

BMW underrates the 335is so the actual spread is more then the 20BHP in the brochure. The 335i typically dyno tests about 265whp or 305BHP. They advertise the 335i @ 300BHP. The 335is dynos, in my case @ 319whp or 367BHP. They advertise the 335is @ 320BHP

:) agree I should have said 335is. I think what you mentioned in regards to performance makes it different than the 335i doesn't it? The new 335i does not have the N54 engine, it has N55 which is different. Also on the exterior is different, like the exhaust system, mirrors, front grill. All of these makes it different, at least to me :)

bear-avhistory 01-25-2013 06:41 PM

Don't think the N54 - N55 thing is material regarding a CAI because base they both dyno within a few whp of each other. That being said the N54 reacts much better to tuning than the N55.
