Scrap, sell, replace, or get repaired overheating PS3?

So my PS3 is overheating. If it has been sitting all day I get about 15 minutes out of it, but once it's hot it'll overheat again in 20 seconds.

From what I can read the fan element separates from the CPU it was chemically bonded to.

You can get htem fixed for anywhere between $60 and $100.

I was going to buy a newer slim one, but they run $270 and I'm gonna end up with extra controllers, remotes, games I dont' want etc. Only other plus would be a bigger HD, but I have never had a problem with it filling since i unload stuff onto a portable.

Has anyone had theirs "reflowed" as they call it? Did the repair last?

60 something views and no comments? Come on festers - nobody here plays playstation?

I repaired mine - took it to an electronics repair place - they reflowed the solder on the GPU - it didn't take the first time, so they redid it again for free - now it never overheats - the repair was $60.

if you decide to get a new one I might be interested in your old PS3 (and maybe the extra controllers) to put in the bedroom for netflix - if the price is right of course.

I found a trick on youtube with a hair drier. But I also ripped mine apart and put new tune up di electric grease on the heat sinks.... Ultimately I bought the new slim one.

btw, Newman271 if anybody wants to play Need for Speed Most wanted or COD

There was a promotion where you send it into Sony and send you a newer model for a discounted price. Check slick deals.

I also looked at the youtube videos. I successfully took apart my laptop and did the fan like this, I even managed to replace the screen in an ipod touch. This, however, not touching it! If there is a chance the place you pay $100 to fix it will screw it up - I think I'll probably screw it up. I took off the cover, took at look at it and promptly put the cover back on!

The $60 place is far from me and if it doesn't take it's gonna be a PITA to drive back and forth, so I'm afraid i'll be visiting the $99 place since it's just a few miles from my house.

It's only a 40 gig, but I have never had a problem since I unload stuff to a portable from time to time.

It appears you really can't get a new slim or a new-new superslim for less than $270 - so there's a $170 difference there - trying to figure out if it's worth it.

Wyb, you are welcome to shoot me a PM with an offer if you are interested - maybe If I can offset the cost of a new one it'll lessen the sting. I live in CT, not sure where you are (shipping etc).

New controller shown - new PS4 - not so much... PS4 controller has touch-screen, share button, headphone jack (so I heard - but I can't see one).

DO NOT take it to a indy repair place!

Sony will do an out of warranty exchange for a like model for $100, and in the event your specific model PS3 is not in stock they send you a slim version.

All you need to do is call SCEA and talk to a rep. If you took it apart already/ broke seal, don't mention that. ;)

I would try this method first - seems like a good deal. I didn't know about this and my indy-repair was fine.

Ideally you want the GPU reballed with better solder but a good reflow will usually last another year or so. There is a reball service on ebay but it is more than the OOW echange with Sony.... And though you dont get a 1 year warranty on your refurb unit you do get 30 days. :dunno:

My reflow from the indy didn't take well the first time - they redid the work and it has been good ever since (2+ years now) - and this is an original 60Gb model I upgraded the HDD to a 320Gb - I play BF3 on it about 2-3 hours at a time - maybe 3-5 times a week... not exactly college kid 12+ hour BF3 sessions - but a good heating up quite often.

The guy who did ours has a proper reflow machine - a "Jovy RE-7500 Rework Station" - they do work on out of state machines - this is a pretty expensive machine for this kind of work, not some kid with a heat gun!

(and they guaranteed their work)
