need help burning oil smell

so i own a 2001 330ci and the service engine soon light is on (my inspection II is due in 14,000 miles if that is related). i also get a smell sometimes that smells like burning oil. it typically happens when i get into higher rpms. today i pulled my car out of the driveway and i got the smell again. (when i pulled it out of the driveway i switched in between drive and reverse 4 times if thats relevant) i immediately popped the hood and saw smoke coming from in between the left side of the engine, and the windshield wiper fluid tank. does anyone know what this smell is coming from and if it causes the service engine light to come on? any help would be great

thanks

VCG. Easy DIY. Most likely unrelated to the SES light.

Ditto to above. Oil will drip from the rear passenger side at the valve cover gasket onto the exhaust below. As soon as you start it up & headers/cats get hot, you'll burn the oil....then the smell via the cabin filter.
