Leaky top

Hey guys, I have an 87 325i convertible... It needs a new top to say the least but the top of the driver and passenger side windows don't quite flush up to the wether stripping so water runs across the gripe were the roof meats the windshield, and pours right in between the window and the stripping... Any ideas how I could rectify this? The rear half of the car seem more recently painted so idk if the frame was slightly tweaked in an accident causi the top to slightly bow up or what but needless to say it really sucks putting a tarp over te car whenever it rains :-/.. Any thoughts?

You can prolly take it to a bodyshop to have them tweak it to fit better. This is one reason why I'd never buy a convertable, too much wind noise and leaking for my taste.

Yea see that's the thing.. Body shop prices are really not in the cards :-/

Is it possible to adjust the window so it can go up higher? The top doesn't appear Bowed but could be an illusion I suppose

If it was bowed then as I think about it... The top wouldn't line up and latch so it can't be that :-/

Is one side tweaked but not the other?

Is there weatherstripping along the frame that the window closes on?

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...46&hg=54&fg=10

Shows the bar that runs across the top of the window... looks really straight. If it is bent or curved then thats the issue.

Yes there is weather stripping along the frame and no it's not bowed its straight and parallel to the top of the window... Same issue on both sides

You need new weather stripping. Same thing happens to my hard top but the weather stripping for the hardtop is $700. I don't think it's near as expensive for the soft top though

Aha ok thankyou

Another thing to try, short of new weatherstripping.

Take the door panel off and adjust the tilt of the window frame inward so that it will seal against the stripping.
That old though, the weather stripping has shrunk.
Mine is a 90. I made that adjustment and it helped. Not a total fix.
I keep a towel in the back. There is still one leak that land in my lap when turning left in the rain.

But it is worth it when the sun is out!!!!! no leaks and the wind noise is way cool with the top down!!

Good luck

Oh that's an interesting idea! So you say I can adjust the angle so it's like more inward towards the car? Will it be obvious when I take the panel off as far as how to make the adjustment?

And I totally agree that the convertible is friggin AWESOME!! but I also have to admit that this issue really blows and I wouldn't likely have the issue w a hardtop :-/.. All in all though I would stick w the convertible if offered the chance to make a trade... Assuming both cars were equal in condition of course
