Hi, I am looking to find the vin number location other than the one on the windscreen, I dont seem to have one in the door. Is there somewhere else i am not looking ? Many thanks in advance.

(since you give a vague description of your X5 (no model/model year/build date) some of the info below may not apply to your situation...please consider adding more vehicle details or make a permanent signature (click the USER CP link at top of page) which includes model/model year/build date. It helps us to help you better..there are multiple engines, transmissions, models, options, instrument cluster configurations etc and not knowing what you have as far as model or option configuration, we may not be able to give you the best answers to your questions) :)

Off the top of my head...these are the places I would look:
  • look on the front right strut tower in the engine bay (right/left perspective is from sitting behind the steering wheel) & you should see all 17 digits of the VIN engraved near the top of the strut tower
  • on the door jamb of the driver's door (usually) or perhaps on the edge of the door
  • on a sticker behind the rear license plate
  • the instrument cluster will give you the last 7 digits of your car's VIN if you perform TEST 1 on the cluster...if you have the HIGH instrument cluster, follow the steps below:
    1. turn ignition to position 1
    2. press & hold the right instrument cluster button until TEST 1 appears in the display
    3. press the left instrument cluster button until you see (the last 7 digits are the last 7 digits of your VIN): FGSTNR: _ _ _ _ _ _ _

If you have to perform TEST 1 to get the last 7 digits of the VIN...once you have those digits...click this link www.bmwvin.com and paste/type the last 7 digits of your VIN into the appropriate box, then solve the scramble puzzle, then click on the SUBMIT INQUERY button. You can then scroll down the page and not only get the full VIN and build date info...you can continue to scroll down the page and get the build sheet of options & standard equipment of how your X came off the assembly line.

In the image below of an e38's engine bay...you can see its 17 digit VIN engraved into the top of the shock tower...it is to the right (and top of strut) of the color label...check this location of your e53 for the same...and the 2nd image shows the VIN label that is located behind the rear license plate:

Below is the placard on the driver's door jamb that has the 17 digit VIN printed on it...this vehicle was imported to Canada:

Below is another image of the VIN engraved on the right shock tower of my 1999 e39 540iT:

Hope this helps you find yours. :)
