Squeel on start up

My 01 X5 4.4 has a squeel on start up that sounds like a belt to me. I have been told it's the water pump. Could this be accurate?

usually happens if a belt is too tight. Hard to diagnose as you havent specified where in the engine bay the noise is coming from.

Belt tensioners have springs (or hyrdraulic). My 02 x5 needed these. I identified by using long screw drive held handle to ear tip to non moving part close too tensioner. Yes while car is running. Be careful. There is stethoscope for this but I don't have one in my TBox.

Just in case: On one of my other vehicles it turned out the squeal was do to the rubber seal failing in the harmonic balancer/Vibration damper. This was the first time I ever heard of or delt with that. So, figured I would chime in. Do/t check while wearing a tie!! :)

hard to say, but if you hear the squeel at start up and it goes away after 3-5 sec then yes WP is supect, tensioner seems to squeel on peridoic interval continuosly.
At least on mine it squeeled at start up and it's the WP bearing on the way out.

Just to throw something else into the mix: If it only happens on a cold start-up then it could be the secondary air system pump failing/failed.

i had a squeal on morning start. my mechanic suggested we check out the belt and tension pulleys, turned out the lower pulley wasnt "rolling" smoothly. To avoid having to go back there, i bought all new pulleys and the belt and also checked out the water pump, which was beginning to loosen. just as well, problem sorted. while at it, i also noticed an oil leak on the oil pressure switch and we just did one job, problem solved,
