Alpina B10 V8 Servicing

Hi there

What kind of servicing schedule would you recommend on a 2001 E39 Alpina B10 V8?

I had an E39 540i 5 years ago and with that I followed the servicing via the green service indicator lights. Should I do the same with the B10 V8? I am wondering whether the extra power and state of tune over the 540i would warrant 6 or 12 monthly oil changes or not (as per an M5). I wouldn't be doing a very high mileage in it. Any owners out there have any opinions on the subject please?

Many thanks!

Hi,

First thing would be to check the owners manual which came in the car? then check the Alpina website ? you could also look on AlpinaRegister web forum and ask. Overall thought, I think the servicing schedule is the same as a 540i, which is the engine it's based on. Do check on things like the specific oil requirements. The Alpinaregister forum has everything and more you need to know about these cars :)

Also, bring it along to the monthly Ace Cafe German night held every first Monday of every month 6pm onwards :)

Cheers, Dennis!

Alpina B10 V8 Servicing

There's a service download PDF on the Alpina Register I'll try and post it up, nothing particularly out of the ordinary.

A good previous service history and then regular maintenance is the key - as with all 10 year old cars!

Got to tell us how big is the difference between the normal 540 and the B10.

PliSsK 04-19-2013 08:18 AM

I believe it's a 4.3L 540i block that's been bored out to 4.6L, up from 280ish to 347 bhp.

And give us a review when it arrive.

Many of the blokes in The Colonies either ignore the indicator, or double up on the interval. My car is in a severe service mode, and the SI STILL wants a 10k mile oil change interval!

Thanks chaps - I've had the car a year and working through the normal E39 problems....

Replaced the hedgehog, fixed the pixels, repaired the leaking rear door cards, new expansion tank & hoses, and the last fix was to repair the alternator. It had FSH before I bought it and I've done all the oils & filters etc.

The engine is awesome when you stick it in manual and brings a masive smile to my face every time I boot it

Sorry, what do you mean, I thought when all 5 green lights went out that that was the service indication?

I'm assuming the hedgehog dies after a similar amount of time to that on the E46? Replacing that hedgehog was a nightmare - so hard to actually get it out. I'm assuming that the E39 hedgehog is easy to remove once one has taken the dash apart etc. Cheers!

If you have very small hands and can stand on your head you can replace the hedgehog just by popping off the cover in the footwell.

As far as servicing goes I think you'd be a mug to try and extend any service intervals. My annual oil change will mean that it's only done about 5k miles but the one thing you can't really fix yourself is a worn engine so to me it's the best insurance you can get. As with any E39 you'll want to be handy with a spanner as I wouldn't want to be putting the car into a garage every time you get a little niggle.

If you can get a good one you shouldn't find any issues with the Alpina upgrades, as I said earlier it's just the regular E39 issues which are part of the fun of owning a 10 year old car.

I believe on RHD cars that the hedgehog is slightly more accessible on the E39 than E46, but I guess I'll find out. Yeah, I'm not proposing to service it less often than the service indicator suggests, but it was really a question about whether to service according to the service indicator or more often. I will probably only be doing a couple of thousand miles a year in it tops for various reasons. I was just trying to clarify the statement above about the service indicator light being red - presumably he is not resetting the indicator each time he does an oil change. Yeah I don't mind fixing things myself, have done on my E46 but when it comes to work that needs the car raised up, then I need to go to a garage and it will cost more. Cheers.
