1998 e38 bmw 740iL manual swap help
 
so im rely looking into a manual swap and i see people do it to their 740i swaps but i was wondering if anyone has done it to the Long wheel base model. i know a 5 series manual trans fits but how what about the driveshaft and stuff? can a mechanic just find a way to make that work or too hard/expensive??? can it be done???

Any help would be awesome guys, kinda new to the forums and youve already been a great help so far!

Yes it can be done, even on the IL model. The driveshaft may need to be custom modified by a specialty shop but it is definetly doable. Check the Euro side of the ETK and see if the IL over there was available with a manual gearbox. I fancied doing a E32 740il in my youth but may end up converting my E38 740i when the tranny dies again just for fun.
Just a hint. Take two short drive shafts and make one long one. The rest is cross reference research and bolt on.

Theres a place in Las Vagas that does custom drivshafts for about $300ish. Customdrivshaft.com or something like that.

thanks guys all the info is much appreciated. im looking to do a lot to my e38 like coilovers, bolt on supercharger (much eaxier/cheaper than turbo), and exhaust. im trying to make this thing legendary haha

Also, I am pretty sure there are lots of hot rod places that could get you set up. The can modify and balance, no prob. Just because it is BMW, drive shafts don't care.

The drive shaft has to be re-tubed. You cant just add to it. I had mine done here in town for $150.
I believe most if not all iL's are missing the bracket in the trans tunnel to support the rear of the shifter. It can be added though.
Also a prefacelift car can have its DME recoded to a euro car to do away with the SES light.

^ i am assuming you are doing or have done a manual swap? and how much did the total build cost you and what kind of shop did you have your driveshaft modified at?

I just did the swap to my 740il geting the coding done this weekend and I spent around 1400 but I also did all the work my self

so my 98 740il has a lot of issues and would be expensive to fix so i found a 98 740i for cheap that i would love to swap in a 6spd manual into. since it isnt the long wheel base version what exactly would be needed besides the actual trans? would i still need the drive shaft out of the 540i? also can i just use the 540 clutch assembly since im using the 540i manual trans?
