2005 X5 4.4 how to remove alternator?

I think my alternator is acting up, coolant tank sprung a leak a few months back and leaked all over the alternator. Now I'm getting intermittent 4x4, brake, oil pressure, and ABS lights. Read in one of these threads that the regulator or brushes may be the problem.
I tried to reach behind the alternator and remove the back cover, but rack and pinion or some other part is in the way. So now I'm trying to remove the alternator, looks impossible. So many things in the way, any tips? Car is a 2005 X5, 4.4L V8, alternator is on bottom left. Thanks

Here are some shots on the removal.
It should help a little at least.
Good Luck.

Thank you for the help! 4x4, brake, and ABS lights came on again. I think I'll try replacing the regulator and brushes.

just buy a new one go to buy autoparts .com its cheap there for a Valeo.

To remove it....

disconnect the battery
remove the fan and upper air box panel

detention the belt, remove idler pulley, belt removed too

loosen the power steering pump, (you dont have to remove it, push it aside or pivot it

remove the 2 bolts, for the alternator, rotate it clockwise 20 degrees and it should come off.... pull it back a bit and disconnect the 2 wires and carefully navigate it out....

Thanks Rahbulk,
Hardest part was trying to get to fan wiring disconnected, I ddin't need to touch the steering pump. Unfortunately rebuilt alternator djdn't solve my dash warning g lights problem.

If you are getting warning lights on the dash, you need to get the X scan to find out why the lights are coming on. Throwing parts at it will get expensive very soon.

Found a thread that talks about a plastic gear being stripped in the transfer case actuator. I get the same clicking sound after turning g the car off. Says I may be able to rotate gear 180 to repair. Free, and sound like it could be the cause of my dash lights. wish I would have seen that first. Will try it this weekend.

You need a new gear... You can buy it for like $130 online... Look it up on YouTube. It will constantly happen since the gear turns during normal driving. They even walk you thru the repair process, the clicking noise at turn off is the give away. Hope you get it done!

It was the plastic actuator gear, replaced it and the 4x4 ABS and DCS light are now off. Thanks all !
