Wiring Question for Aftermarket Nav
I needed a good AWD vehicle while on a long term temporary job assignment in NY as my FWD Lexus RX350 sucks in the snow and belongs back at my home in Florida where, at worst, it only has to deal with heavy rain. I was actually looking for a 2011 X3 CPO but my wife just found a 2007 E83 X3 3.0Si with low miles, outstanding condition, single owner, and a very fair price. It also, by coincidence, exactly color matches (in and out) our Z3. We bought the car but it does not have Nav and hands free Bluetooth, both important features to us.
I am going to use a relatively new Garmin Nuvi I already have and I want to "permanently" mount it in the lidded storage tray where the factory Nav would normally go. It did not take much research to find an installation kit for a BMW branded Garmin product that replaces the tray/lid with an open tray and includes a mounting kit for the BMW branded Nuvi. Replacing the tray itself seems straightforward but I do not have a clue where a good place would be to tap into switched 12VDC as I do not have the E83 TIS and have not yet been able to find one. I assume the switched power supply for the radio might suffice but I would rather have the exact point/wires rather than start testing for it. Also, I have seen some indication that the wiring harness that appears to come with this kit can accomplish what I need by plugging directly into an unused connector and this is much preferable to using connectors to tap directly into wires.
I would appreciate any good reference with respect to exactly where to make my connections. There is a lot posted on the subject of retrofitting a Nav but I have been unable to find anything that provides a good wiring reference.
Also, I need a switched 12VDC source for my Valentine in the overhead panel. Any reference to the wiring in this panel would also be appreciated.
On my fuse panel (08), the first 4 are called reserve, # 4 is definitely timed with the ignition switch - I had an extra “add a circuit” so just used that for simplicity.
Now this was for a camera system, but may be applicable
IGN is always Violet with a stripe. The factory Garmin does not connect to a waiting socket, I have it. It connects at the radio via wire taps. The radio pinout is on Google images.
Here is an idea
Here is my V1 remote mount- http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=695891
Also, the BMW GPS kit leaves the GPS up and exposed all the time. I toyed with the idea of mounting it inside the lid to the bin on the dash so that it dropped down (or popped) up when the panel was opened. Search the forum there is some info on such a mounting. I just never felt like diving into it. Actually if you just got the power up to the bin you could probably just prop it up and it would work fine.
