Anybody wonder about the brakes on the X3?
 
First off, I love my 2013 X3. One of the best cars I have owned. I wonder about the brakes though and feel like if there was a real emergency would they do the job. Anyone else notice the poor stopping distance?

I'm OK with the brakes on my X3. Google Brake Bedding and consider whether that is something that you want to do.

Oh. This makes since now! They are new brakes and just need a good breaking in.

Artie, for many people the buildup of brake dust on the wheels is a bigger concern than stopping distance, which . I went to the parts department to buy some BMW wheel cleaner while I was waiting for my plates to come down from upstairs. The guy in the parts department said "Yeah, we've got that. You'll want to buy two." He was right.

I've posted this before and others have as well. One of the first things that I noticed between my old e83 x3 and this one was the decrease in stopping power. Not that it's bad but it's not as good as the e90 or e83. Same amount of brake dust though! :thumbdwn:

I'm considering sourcing better pads and tires... Just not sure if I want to make that investment as it's a lease.

It also doesn't help that the brake pedal doesn't give you much power in the first few inches of travel... You really have to step hard on it. That's something I need to get used to but ultimately I think it's still inadequate

Edit: my buddy who is in the parts biz said he has some clients who have complained about the same thing and he is procuring some European pads for them... I'll have to check with him on what the feedback was. He also said that he suspects the suspension tuning impacts the brake performance

My X5 has better breaks that X3. We even took the new X3 to the dealer to get checked. X5 breaks very smoothly. X3 has "mushy" breaking. With gentile pressure, breaks hardly response. Press hard, and the card screeches to a full stop.

break = to damage or destroy
brake = to stop

My '14 is very smooth and responsive on braking, and I feel very confident that, when I need them, they will stop me and my 4000 pound beast right now! I bedded my brake pads shortly after delivery too. The rear pads had all sort of contact inconsistencies that bedding fixes.

Car and driver tested the 2011 X5's braking distance from 70 MPH to 0 MPH in 159'. In a seperate test, the X3 went from 70-0 MPH in 165'. The two stopping distance is practically the same, they just have different feel to the brake pedal. The X5's brakes are more on the top part of the pedal and the X3 more on the bottom.
