a word of advice ?

Hi everyone,

Recently I sold my e36 coupe and looking to buy e53, I was hopping that you could give me some beginner advice, what should i look for when buying what particular year is good? I'm considering 3.0i or 4.4i both with automatic transmission so if you have some fuel consumption figures and common issues for both of those engine's it would be nice. I'm also wondering does every X5 comes with 4wheel drive ?

Thank you and best regards :dunno:

Both are 4 wheel drive. I believe that's where the X in X5 comes from. Fuel isn't bad on the 3.0 but your gonna wish you had the 4.4 if you like to drive. Get a newer model with low miles. BMW's are great but they can have a lot of expensive problems. You need to maintain them.

4.4 litre does around 17mpg and the 3.0 litre does around 21mpg. I don't know what the official figures are - these are real figures as I have a 3.0 litre now and I had the 4.4 litre before.

Hello & welcome. :)

Historically (starting with the e30 3 series 325ix)...the use of "x" in the model's nomenclature indicated the vehicle was 4WD/AWD. This carried over to the SAV/SUV models as well which were at first all AWD (X3/X5/X6)...but when BMW brought out the X1...they also made a RWD model and threw another nomenclature into the mix..."sDrive".

So now, any sedan with an "x" in the name means it is AWD (and has xDrive)...but with the latest SAV/SUVs (starting with the e84 X1/f25 X3/f15 X5) that were traditionally always AWD/4WD...now have a RWD variant that will have the nomenclature "sDrive".

Yes, we need a menu to keep up with the changes BMW has thrown at us. :eeps:

thank you for that info, and power wise since you had both is 4.4 worth going for over 3.0 ? or is 3.0 enough for a family car ? my e36 was 328i and im used to have some power under the pedal but now I got married and expecting baby so im going for the safety but still would not mind some speed on lonely drives, were you more satisfied with 4.4 or now with 3.0 when you take everything in consideration. sorry for that many question but it is a big deal for me now to buy the right x5

Being that you're in Europe (I'm assuming by your location as Sarajevo)...you have the option of the 3.0d (diesel) X5 which we didn't get here in the USA. Not sure if you've considered that model...but I thought I'd toss it out there as another choice. :)

Here's some info...based on the X5 models sold here in the USA:

I find the 3.0i has plenty of power for me and the family are spped limits are only at 100km max so don`t need the extra power whicj = less speeding tickets IMO

My wife has the 4.4, and she really enjoys it, nice to have the extra power passing other cars and dodging traffic lol. We will get closer to 20 on the highway, pretty good for 4800 pound sport SAV.

I have a 4.4 and the mpg: 17-18 with mixed city/highway driving. I too had a 328 (avg 24mpg). I opted for the bigger engine because of the weight of the vehicle. Also like that fact it will get up and go. I've read the 3.0 are good in terms of repair costs. However if you do your homework, you can score a low mileage 4.4 at a good price. The 4.4's may be tough to find. I live near Chicago and found my 4.4 in Beverly Hills. Beat of luck

The 3.0 has more than enough power for a family car. It has never felt under-powered and really does shift when you want it too. I don't even notice it when towing my boat either.

The 4.4 power is absolutely awesome - it pulls like a train and the sound of the V8 is simply amazing - it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up! I had a smile on my face every time I drove the 4.4 - thing is I got depressed so much that the fuel gauge dropped so fast! A couple of times my mates asked why I liked the X5 so much. All I used to do was say listen to this and start the engine and rev the nuts off it!!!!!!!

If you are not worried about the cost of fuel then go with the 4.4 - just because you can!

safety wise both cars as just as good as each other.

I own a 540i which has a 4.4 liter, and I have an x5 3.0, which as far as maintenance is way cheaper than a 4.4, yes the 3.0 is down on power, but research the 4.4 compared to 3.0, and you will find that the 4.4 has a lot more issues, valley pan gasket, valve covers, and I've had vanos failure on my previous 2002 540i, don't get me wrong I love the power of the BMW v8, but unless you plan on doing your own work I would go for the 3.0.

I would like to thank you all for advices and for sharing your experiences it helped a lot. I was considering 2 other SUVs like '06 Grand Cherokee and mazda cx 7 but now I am certain to go for x5, engine wise I still didn't decide should i compensate fuel consumption for power and go for 3.0 or just go maniac mode with 4.4. I think I'll look for both 3.0 and 4.4 and better deal I get i will take that one. I live in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and market here for BMW's is bad so litle good cars so I'll probably import one from Germany or Italy but I'm hopping that soon I will present my new car on this forum. One more time Thank you all and best regards
