Inspection 2 at 57000 miles, what's involved?
I inquired about an "inspection 2" just to prepare my wallet. In about 9K miles I'll be due.
They told me it will cost around $700.
Does anyone know what actually is done for $700, besides the oil change?
I've already had my pads, rotors, tires changed at 48K. All under warranty. Long story.
Alignment has been done, etc.
The car was purcahsed as a "certified" pre-owned. So I am curious what is done for the pre-owned certified part.
Will things be done in the "inspection 2" that should have been done as part of the "certification" process. Just curious.
Any insight into this is appreciated.
If there are somethings I can do myself, such as the oil change, I rather save the money.
If you log into Owercircle at BMWUSA. It will tell you what Inspection 2 is for your model. Here's my for example. I owned a 323CIC 04. (Bad format, I just copy and paste)
BMW Inspection II
Change oil and oil filter while engine is at operating temperature.
We recommend BMW High Performance 5W-30 Synthetic oil, p/n 07 51 0 017 866
Check transmission for leaks.
Check rear axle for leaks.
Half shafts: Check for leaks at flexible boots.
Visually check fuel tank, lines and connections for leaks.
Check condition, positioning, and mounting of exhaust system. Examine for leaks.
Check power steering system for leaks. Check p/s fluid level; add fluid if necessary.
Check overall thickness of front and rear disc brake pads using special tool. Record results. If replacement is necessary*:
Examine brake disc surfaces. Clean brake pad contact points in calipers. Grease wheel centering hubs. Check thickness of parking brake linings only when replacing rear pads. Record results.
Check brake and clutch system connections and lines for leaks, damage, and incorrect positioning.
Check steering for absence of play, condition of suspension track rods, front axle joints, steering linkage and joint disc.
Check parking brake actuation. Adjust if necessary.
Check all tire pressures (including spare). Correct if necessary. Check
condition of tires (outer surfaces [left/right]), tread wear and pattern; in
case of uneven tread wear readjust wheel alignment if requested(to be

Inspect entire body according to terms of rust perforation limited warranty (must be performed at least every two years).
Read out diagnostic system.
Check engine cooling system/heater hose connections for leaks. Check coolant level and antifreeze protection level; add coolant if necessary.
Check level of brake and clutch fluid in reservoir. Add fluid if required.
Replace brake fluid every 2 years (timing interval begins from vehicle's production date).*
Check windshield washer fluid level and antifreeze protection. Fill up and/or correct if necessary.
Check air conditioner operation.
Note: reduce replacement interval in dusty operating conditions.
Reset Service Indicator.
Replace intake air cleaner element.

Check battery state-of-charge, and charge if required.*
Check lighting system, i.e., headlights, foglights, parking, back-up, license-plate, interior (including map reading lights), glove box, flashlight, illuminated make-up mirrors, luggage compartment lights.
Check instrument panel and dashboard illumination.
Check all warning/indicator lights, check control.
Check turn signals, hazard warning flashers, brake lights, horns, headlight dimmer/flasher switch.
Check wipers and washer system(s);wiper blades, washer jet positions.
Check condition and function of safety belts.
Recharge or replace batteries for remote controls in all vehicle master keys.
Check central locking/double lock.
Check operation of all latches.
Check heater/air conditioner blower fan, rear window defogger.
Check rear view mirrors.
Visually examine the SRS airbag units for torn covers, obvious damage or attachment of decals, decorations or accessories.
Activate automatic roll-over protection system (if equipped) via diagnostic link.
Note:First remove hardtop/lower top.
Lubricate the convertible top sliding hinge covers using a non-silicone spray.
Road test with check of brakes, suspension, steering, clutch/manual transmission or automatic transmission.
So basically for $700, all they do is "check" the car all over, which I just had them do due to a warranty issues.
Replace some filters
charge or replace master key batteries
That's a ridiculous price for this don't you think?
So at roughly at $75/hr and some parts, thats almost 9hr's worth of work.

That is cheap. Here in Houston the going rate is $100/hr. :(
cssmgt. In my manual, it also states that they
change the spark plugs and oxygen sensor.
I think they may change the fuel filter along
with the coolant. In parts your looking at :
6 spark plugs
7 qts. of synthetic oil
4 qts. of coolant
Call the dealer and have them give you a price
on the parts . It may be around $300. I think
these engines have 4 oxygen sensors :dunno:
If thats the case then 4 to 5 hours of time plus
the parts should put you around the $700 mark.
I am sure that the $700. does not include O2 sensors. The thing is that the e36 also needed a diff. fluid, trans. fluid, and spark plug changes and when the e46 came the Insp prices stayed the same. So basically they are charging you for:
Air Filter change
Oil and filter change
All the "checks" listed by Nde
And yes, I do this myself and save $600+ dollars
You're from Canada so it could be different but here in the US you don't get half that stuff...
brake fluid flush and the rest is all just checking stuff
oh and a microfilter and an air filter woopie!
oh and its 790$ here at my dealer in NJ RIPOFF!!!! I will do my brakes, spark plugs, oil, and microfilter for about 150 bucks a savings of 640$ :thumbup:
