Fuel Tank after a month

It is finally done after having the car on Jacks for a month and everythng in pieces. First I got a wrong gas tank, then the right tank but missing the s pipe (had to be ordered from Germany) for connection. Then the wrong lock nuts from the dealership then I had to silver solder the connections while the tank was in the car (no gas). That one was my fault, I figured I would put the tank in and get everything ready.
So I started out one night to change some lights after I came back from skiing. This amounted to the car not starting and that seemed real strange. The end result was a bad transfer pump, fuel pump, bad gas filter, blew the relay to the fuel pump and fuel injectors, bad cold start valve, cracked distribiter and faulty coil, bad fuel line and a rusted out fuel tank that was leaking on top of the tank. Oh well, it's all fixed now and running like a charm..not bad for couple hundred thousand miles. Will never complain about this car, bought it new in 1987 and just keeps on going.

I just had to replace the fuel tank in my 91 318is. I just finished it up this weekend, with much of the same issues. All together it took three full weeks to get everything back in order. It took a while to figure the problem out. Order the part, it didn't fit exactly right, but I made it work. Had to order that s pipe from Germany as well. I replaced a bunch of other things as well while I had everything apart up under there. The ole' fuel tank is not an easy job to say the least. Now it is back though, and running better than ever! :)

Where was the fule tanked rusted out on top? I know I have this same situation so I'm curious to know a little more about where the leak was.

Mine was rusted through at the top where the hoses connect the the tank. Not real sure how that happened. Not too common I don't think, but it happens.

Thanks. I suspect I ahve something similar going on with mine but won't be able to tell for sure until I drop it whihc won't be for a while.

BTW, nice car. Wish my body looked that good.

Mine rusted from the inside out on the two metal lines on top of the tank. There is no way to get to it without dropping the tank. I guess in the Northern States that use salt on the roads or if you live close to the oceans, the tanks rust from the inside out. There is a small piece of sponge that you put over that area to stop the rubbing. I figure it doesn't help that much since mine had slid completly off. If we can get another 19 years out of this tank that will be real good.
I would suggest that you get all of your parts before you take the tank out, if you can wait. Our's was leaking very bad and the fumes became to strong to endure and it get's a little risky having gas dripping down on the exhaust.
If you need the S pipe, get that and put it on before you put the tank in, it will save you from silver soldering it from under the car. Also get the right lock nuts for your drive shaft. I think if I would have had all of the parts (right ones the first time) it would have been a long day's job with a person helping. By myself, as I did it, would have been two days with lots of breaks. Have fun.
