Most off the shelf batteries are vented through...

Most off the shelf batteries are vented through the caps above each cell. BMW batteries have a port on the side for the tube to vent the gasses through the trunk to the outside.

Yea, it's called a secondary air pump which pumps air into the exhaust for improved emissions. I have a sketch from REALOEM and it shows the components good but not so much on the mounting location....
