W/o the heater valve, even if they modify the plumbing system, coolant flow is uncontrolled.

You guys are right, the motor itself rarely goes out.
In 99% of the cases, it is the regulator.
So, if Dorman regulator sans motor costs $50, then it is fine.

I have been using Green Prestone for 25 years, all kinds of cars, from Honda to BMW to Volvo.
Replace it every 2-3y, zero problems, 16 years later the 1998 Volvo internals look good.
