I would say you need to get it flat bedded to a repair shop. Sounds like fan clutch/ water pump has failed taking out the fan and you have to repair/replace those and hope the engine has not suffered...

I bought both the Peake OBDII & SRS scanners when we bought the X5 in 2004. There are many more alternatives today. I would probably buy a Foxwell NT510 or the like today for a stand alone system.
