It's good to know that rotating the gear has worked for people. However for a part that is about $25 with shipping it just seems like its best to change the gear. At least that's IMO and what I did.

I think it will be hard to sell it with the lights on and since it's a $20 part to buy the actuator gear and an easy DIY it doesn't make sense to try and sell it w/o fixing it.

I would start with changing the fluids. Regardless of "potentaly" causing more damage, you will have to open up the transfer case if the fluid change dose not address your issue.
