I use European Mobil 1 0W40 with no problems on my 540i, the same as my Porsche 911 3.2. Very happy.

Mine on a 540 touring was the power steering...

Mine on a 540 touring was the power steering pump. A bolt had fallen out at the front of the pump, causing the remaining front mounting to fracture.

No oil spewing, but my 540i had similar symptoms due to a faulty ignotion switch - quite common, and cheap to replace.

Yes, after driving many more Km, and asking dealers to check the bearings it did not worsen. Replacement of my Michelins with Contis the noise completky disappeared, still good after 20000 Km!

My 540 has 240000 km, I changed to Mobil1 0/40, which I use in my 3.2 911. Perfect, no leaks and zero consumption. Is the Euro oil different to the US product?

Yes I have a ZF box, it makes sense to drop the sump and change the filter as well every 50000 km. Metallic particles stick to the solenoid tips and will evntually cause failure.
