no you shouldnt need to unlatch the top before putting the top down. when working correctly, you should just have to hold the 'top down' button down, and the top will unlatch itself and go down...

just replaced rear shocks/springs on the car. as they are on now, they do not have the plastic covers on them, as i didnt have any new ones. how critical are these parts?
