I have an '05 X5 4.4i and did not have to remove the fan clutch. Was a little tight getting the inboard bolt, but was able to do it with no bloody knuckles.

Agreed- the thermostat sound like the issue. I just changed mine out (a very easy DIY) and the temp regulation is rapid and efficient again.
