As I mentioned, I did the same thing. Once he found the leak, I just gave in.

If I can get to 300K on my engine, I will be very happy. Lot's of work to maintain, but a joy to drive.

I did not know the upper timing cover was leaking until the shop told me. I just did not know what to look for.

As for a DIY, I found this in the best links:...

Buying Another E39

+1 on the low mileage and service history. My 2001 540 has been fun driving, but more history would really help when determining what to address next. Getting a full set of keys is really great.

It turns out that my CCV was bad. It had gotten so difficult to drive that on the way to get my smoke test, it would stall at each intersection. Thankfully, I had already bought the CCV. So, when my...

1998 E39 540i Stalling

I believe it has two Cam Position Sensors (CPS) like my 2001 540. There is one for each bank, i.e. each side of the engine. I would start by replacing whichever one threw the code. Bank 1 is...

You really need to get a code reader that will point you in a direction. For example, on my 2001 540, I also replaced my valve cover gaskets and grommets. It cleared up my oil leaking. But, my car...

leaking antifreeze / water help

Mine did not make noise, but did leak quite a bit just before I replaced it. I would look in the Best Links for a DIY.
