Agreed. Also a narrower tire will cut snow/rain better. You could argue take off traction in the dry may be better, but that shouldn't be much of an issue with the Xdrive anyway.

If it's close to the side wall (usually an 1 inch or so) you should not try to patch the tire. If your other 3 tires have decent tread you can have a tire shaved to match the existing tread depth.

Yes you can do a stagger but its important to stay with correct tire sizes. 255/40R18 Front with 285/35R18 shoudl work well. Let me know if I can offer any other assistance.
