I'm guessing the ball peen hammer weighed much less than the 4lbs of the plastic coated dead blow hammer. The plastic on the outside absorbs some of the impulse needed to free a stuck rotor.

I also try to drive them at least once a month to keep the bearings, brake surfaces etc. loose. I just putter around the block once or twice since I don't keep insurance on them all the time.
